TAFs and METARs via GPRS phone.

I used to be able to retrieve TAFs and METARs from WapMX.com to my GPRS phone using the url http://wap.mx.com/fly.wml , but all I get now is "Couldn't reach the indicated web server".

Is there a temporary problem with WapMX.com? Or has the service been discontinued? Anyone know of another free wap-based source for world-wide TAFs and METARs?

I use Avbriefs WAP service and never have any problems - http://www.avbrief.com/wap.wml. I've never yet managed to access activitae by WAP though

Tried that - kept getting "File format unknown"

Edited to add later that the 'File format unknown' was from activitae, have now reset the phone to AvBrief and it's fine. Thanks, chums!

Is it possible that there is a (hopefully temporary) problem at your GPRS service provider?

I am concerned to hear that some of you have trouble accessing activitae.com/wx.wml for a wap weather service. The site has been extensively tested although not against all phone models/providers.

I see from the logs that large numbers of users are successfullly accessing the site for European, American and Australian weather.

If you have trouble with your mobile I would like very much to hear from you with a brief note as to what phone make and model you have and with which provider. Any description as to the kind of response you received on your phone would also help track down the problem.

Well, I tried http://wapmx.com/fly.wml and that just gave 'page not found'...

Fortunately the AvWeb link works fine; however, although the activitae site will open, it just comes up with 'file format not known' if a TAF or METAR is requested. The ICAO look-up does work though.

Phone is a Nokia 6310i and I'm on Vodafone UK GPRS, for your info, angelecr. Thanks for your kind interest.

Both activitae (http://www.activitae.com/wx.wml) and avbrief (http://www.avbrief.com/wap.wml) worked first time for me.

Agree that wapmx no longer seems to be working.

Alternative to fiddling with a WAP phone is to try these out using the simulators (click on whichever phone you prefer) at http://www.gelon.net/. Select "Open URL" and be careful not to double up the http://

Guys,

Don't go to wapmx.com/fly.wml

I too get "Page not found" when using that.

Go to "wapmx.com" the logo will come up. Wait about 5 seconds, then move down the menu and select "Aviation weather". It works fine. It seems that just the location of the page has changed.

The problem is identified and will need a rewrite of code sections associated with the new interface on activitae.com/wx.wml.

Meanwhile the link to 'original interface' should produce a results display for Nokia 6310(i) and other users having trouble with the new interface.

I apologise for any inconvenence caused to users.

A.

angelecr - you are an angel! I'm not sure what wizardry you've just done, but the http://activitae.com/wx.wml site is now working just fine on my Nokia 6310i. Thanks a lot - brilliant service!

If only other companies had such efficient response to reported problems! If I'd phoned Vodafone, no doubt I'd have had to wait for ages, then go through the daft pantomime of taking the SIM card out, then replacing it, carrying out a forced network handshake etc etc......which would have achieved nothing!

Thanks again!

BEagle,

Thanks for the kind words of feedback. I am glad the gremlin that stopped things working on your Nokia 6310i and a few other phones has been removed.

The thing to note about the 'service' is that activitae.com is not a company. I just do this to keep my mind active. Hence 'activitae'.

I think, in this ageist culture of ours, I'm supposed to be retired!

The section where alternative weather stations are suggested if your first choice has no weather. still appears to be faulty for all phone types. (And it is driving me crazy!)

PM'd you but they don't appear to have been read. Just to say this 6310i is working fine too. Nice service.

Just a quick note to say that international weather to your mobile from activitae.com is now fullly functioning for all mobile users. It again works correctly with all flavours of Nokia and other phones. Unless, of course, you know differently?

The service, whereby if a requested airport doesn't have a weather report a list of nearby alternates is suggested, has been reinstated. Additionally, the opportunity to add sunset time at the selected airport has been taken.

http://activitae.com/airbase/phone.htm shows you how to set up your phone.

I would like to thank those who took the time to contact me and helped trouble-shoot the problem.

Angela

Thanks again, angelacr, for your excellent GPRS site. It's the most useful one I've found and it's obviously been tailored to exactly the right level of pilots' needs!
