Thom books and PPL Confuser

Just about to purchase the neccesary study books for the JAA PPL. Going to go for the Trevor Thom books but have seen that some believe I would be better getting the CAP 413 book instead of the Thom vol. 7 on Radio Telephony. Would you agree?. (Just before I make a tool of myself trying to negotiate a saving of c£2.56 on a starter pack!?)

Also there seems to be 2 versions of the PPL confuser available....One version by N. Sornying (flightstore) and one by G. Stephens (transair)..??. Are they practically identical or are there differences that I should be aware of.

Thanks

Yes, I agree.

Thom 7 and CAP413 are quite similar in format, but there are some minor differences in them, and where there are differences CAP413 is the difinitively correct one. No real point in getting Thom 7.

As for the different Confusers, I've never come across this before. The only thing I can think of is that I'm wondering if one of them might be the IMC Confuser? If that's the case, then you don't want that - you want the PPL Confuser. Will try to do some research and get back to you.

I found the N Sornying PPL Confuser to be excellent at preparing for the exams AFTER reading the Thom books. I haven't seen the Stephens book so cannot comment on it.

N Sornying also does the IMC Confuser so make sure you get the right one, with a black cover (for PPL) as opposed to the IMC one with a green cover.

If you are just starting out then you won't be needing THOM book 5 for a while either as it is for IMC training.

Agree with FFF that CAP 413 is better than the Thom book.

Sorry but all the PPL exams are changing in the next few weeks.

Havn't seen the new exams yet but presume that the PPL confuser although good practise won't be quite the help it used to be.

If you find the Thom books a bit dry. The Pratt series do the job and are a bit more readable

and of course you can print cap 413 off from the caa website, saving you even more cash, especially if you do it at work

Thanks for the help.

MJ,

do you know much about the changes to the PPL exams or where I could find such info?.

Don't really want to buy some books that might be irrelevant in a couple of weeks from now.

Cheers.

Oneday,

What little is known publicly about these exams is on this thread - including the relevance of the Confuser. Unless anyone else knows anything new since that thread was updated, of course.
