Sheffield City today

Seems like every pilot and his dog was availing themselves of the beautiful weather and free landing fee voucher in Flyer to visit Sheffield City Airport today. At 1345 there must have been almost twenty singles on the ramp, plus a couple of helis and a twin including a smart Westland Wasp and a De Havilland Chipmonk. In fact, there were so many aeroplanes parked out there that finding further parking places for visitors was becoming a challenge for the guy in the tower.

Only sad thing to note was that the cafe in the terminal building is closed at weekends - on what was by their own admission was probably their busiest day ever, there were a number of air visitors who just turned round and took off again and went elsewhere (ourselves included) because of this ommission. The rather busy guy on the desk did promise to mention it to management on Monday, so maybe things will improve - whats the betting that next week they open the cafe and the weather is dreadful?

All in all, Sheffield is a very pleasant and easy place to fly into now even in a SEL, with helpful staff, but if you do think about visiting be aware of the lack of weekend catering.

Andy

PS: Retford / Gamston now have a cafe serving excellent snacks, hot and cold - Sheffield's loss was their gain as we dropped into Gamston on our way back to East Midlands for lunch!

Sheffield really needs visitors to prove that it is viable. The owners can't yet dig up the runway for something more valuable as there are legal restrictions for one or two years yet, but the land is far more valuable as an office park unless it makes sensible money as an airport. There is already a possibility that the runway is largely removed and the facility remains only as a heliport.

Keep visiting Sheffield - even on non-voucher days it only costs £5.75 for a light single
