Oh, I dream of days gone by when finger docks first were implemented and passengers could board leisurely at their own pace up to one hour before flight departure. One of the first times I experienced that was on an AF B727 from Orly to GVA decades ago. Seemed so much more civilized than being bussed to the plane or walking across the apron.

Of course, back then there were no seat allocations, just first class and economy class, with smoking allowed in the last three rows of each section, ( also a very new concept at that time ). No security, no large hand luggage wheelies and passengers were real people and not cattle.

Who can forget the time Air France introduced non-smoking sections on their flights? A 727 with the port side seats non-smoking and the starboard reserved for smokers................

Strange though it may sound, that's a fairly sensible way to do it, given how the cabin airflow works.

Asturias,

You’ve reminded me of an anecdote which I’m sure you’ll appreciate. Flying back to Jakarta from Bali on a Garuda 747, there were no non-smoking seats available. The very helpful check-in lady at Denpasar put us in the front row of the section immediately aft of the non-smoking seats.

Her thoughtfulness didn’t help much, since the non-smoking section was occupied by a bunch of Pertamina managers going home from a golfing weekend. They puffed away on Kreteks all the way to Halim!

But a Kretek isn't a cigarette really - it's a way of life................

A few years back I found some in a small shop in France - went down very well at the next fancy dress party (in the UK) where I went as the Sultan of Jogya

Dave - it wasn't and it didn't. The Americans on board were fit to be tied, coughing and sputtering and complaining - but in English - which didn't do them any good at all - a very Gallic shrug from the CC.

LH do this in DUB at present.

With this system if you are 'Group 5 Economy class travellers with aisle seat' there is no incentive to be at the gate early because you have to wait longer to board. Even if you decide you'll make it your business to be Group 5 first on you'll find all the overhead luggage space is pretty much full especially now we are in winter when many carry more hand luggage in the form of coats, and scarves etc. The system was quicker the first week I saw them use it but now it seems to be slower, Could the claimed 10% saving hold true over the longer term? I travel the DUB-FRA route twice a week and haven't experienced any improvement in timekeeping because of it.

Even folks in Group 2 casually throw a bag into the lockers as they pass along. By the time G5 get there?

Asturias56 29th Nov 2019 08:13

Check your bags and sit in the bar near the gate until they page you by name.................. you get on and there is no queue - as long as you don't mind the looks of hatred from one and all who you've kept waiting for 5 minutes
