Is anyone even the slightest bit surprised?

I have to tell you that I have a disabled son who uses a wheelchair. Every time we go through security in the UK or (more especially) in the USA, things become quite difficult.

I think our worst experience was the TSA at Miami outbound to the UK.

My son was taken away from us in his wheelchair and was not treated well.

However, I was able to reassure him afterwards that he still had a high degree of intelligence which far exceeded the hopeful expectations of the "highly trained" staff who had spent 15 minutes making themseves feel inportant.

Look at the war on terror's worldwide success at protecting us though. A fake bomb gets through, just thank your lucky stars no water gets through. They must intercept thousands of litres every single day. Sleep assured.

No safety action is 100% and the terrorists also consider the odds.

Fortunately the exact data, failures vs sucesses is not published keeping the bad guys guessing.

By banning liquids they are stopping home made liquid bombs from being mixed on board.

I suspect that if they failed to stop a bomb getting through then the results would be noticeable quite soon afterwards.:suspect:

The excellent man in charge at SFB (some many years ago) should have been sent to all the other places to teach manners.

Yes they do. Usually when certain scenarios are pushed to extremes as a training aid. We don't crash for real. Your point is?

There are no innocuous, water-like fluids that could be mixed in flight to produce a bomb. Binary high explosives exist, but the individual chemicals are quite nasty in their own right, and you need the facilities of a chemical lab to mix them without a premature 'fizzle'.

And if such chemicals did exist, the current policy of confiscating water bottles would be unable to prevent their use. The searches are (inevitably) much less than 100% effective, and there's no penalty for detection other than the confiscation of the liquid. So a determined terrorist could simply carry on trying until they succeeded. As the IRA used to say: "You have to be lucky every time. We only need to be lucky once."
