ek crew will get 24 hours in lax once it goes daily. just enough time to fall into a zombie-like sleep then stay in the same state for the flight back :ugh:

the hawk: East or West are not applicable for LAX-DXB. As you can see with the tool mentioned above, initial heading is 6° North and you go very close to the North Pole.

long flights

you could throw in MEL-LAX 7921 miles

questions on how long a statute mile are welcomed!
For starters it's 80 chains or 320 perches in length.

To turn things around, what's the shortest commercial flight between two different airports?

Shortest Flight

Been done before on pprune I believe. Shortest is Westray to Papa Westray (2 mins). Shortest Jet flight (from the past) I think was Oakland to San Francisco.

Acknowledged - No East / West for LAX-DXB routes. I was calculating relative position via latitude only - obviously not applicable here.

Curiously, LAX and EWR are approx 600 miles apart (when considering SIN-EWR at 8285 miles, and SIN-LAX at 7621 miles). All via the magic of great circle routes.

Many thanks to all for the info exchange.

(My personal shortest jet flight . . LSV (Nellis AFB) - LAS (Las Vegas) in a B727 . . . (eight minutes total block time, chalk to chalk).

... and the one furthest from a usable airport is probably Joberg - Sydney

I think Continental used to fly between Hobby and Bush - 23 miles!

NW3825 seemed pretty short the last time I took it. And the last time I watched it, I could see it take off and land.

My personal shortest scheduled jet flight was MBJ KIN with BA.
Everyone belted up and no service for the whole leg - most strange especially in a 747.

Plymouth - Newquay was another short belt up and shut up leg.

I'm sure that LAX-SYD and LAX-MEL beat that.

I did the MBJ~KIN in 1989 as the route was: LGW~BDA (IIRC)~MBJ~KIN.

In a BD Saab (I forget the model number) there was DND~EDI which I clocked at 11 minutes wheels to wheels and we could see EDI almost as soon as we lifted off. That was 1998.

With regards to JNB to ORD and over water, I have not done the route but I thnk SAA transists at Abuja or similar in West Africa. I sit to be corrected.
