Has anyone else managed to lose their own bag? (Or is anyone else willing to admit it?)

Flying out to Abidjan for a two year stint with two small kids and having used all of our native charm we had LOTS of checked luggage. Someone (me) forgot to count all the bags when we left the luggage carousel and it wasn't till we'd got through customs (always an interesting experience) that I realised that we had one bag fewer than expected.

Getting back through the customs area of an airport into the baggage hall is one of lifes more fascinating problems.

LH again. February 2000, LHR to Shanghai, first leg to Frankfurt delayed several hours due to airport snowed in, finally arrived (no sign of any snow) and of course told we had missed connection (us and several million others). Queued literally hours to rebook for next day and get hotel, Trade Fair in Frankfurt meant we had to go 50kms in taxi to hotel, nobody could locate our luggage, promised to deliver it to hotel. Next morning still no bags. Went to airport and found we could claim 400 DMs each for inconvenience, any clothes we needed to buy we could give to LH and get full refund or keep and get 50% refund. Eventually boarded the flight - luggageless. Finally arrived in Pudong airport first thing we saw in baggage hall was this big pile of bags ours included (didn't come off our flight not enough time). So given only one flight a day between Frankurt and Shanghai the bags obviously went previous day on the connection we weren't allowed on! Odd. But the 1200DMs we had covered our expenses for 2 out of three weeks in Shanghai!!

Thumbs up Post script

Should have posted before, but had a few problems after my return. Last week did the same journey with KLM as my original post. Happy to report everything went well, although indulged in some personal gallows humour while waiting for the conveyor at NCL.

Have lost bags many times on many airlines, including, Alitalia (never got them back and had to use company and personal insurance to compensate for the loss), Northwest (returned 3 days later), SAS (could not have been more helpful and delivered cases at midnight that day by cab from LHR).

Two weeks ago Mrs Luke and I got married in Antigua (I kept that quiet on JB). At a reception at the hotel for those of us marrying that week, a group of Americans and Canadians, mentioned that all their baggage had been lost on the same flight by AA, including wedding clothes.

Hilarious activities for the next 3 days, as we swapped suits, shoes, ties and even two wedding dresses!! I have photos of three of the ceremonies, with all of the grooms wearing my suit! Great week though.

Lukeafb1, Congratulations! I'm sure it's been a funny marriage!

Despite I fly as a pax from CDG several times a month I have never had any baggage lost from there (now that I have written it, it sure will )
I lost luggage with BA twice and AZ once but I'm sure the airports (handling) are more to blame than the airlines. In case of BA didn't get my suitcase immediately but were very efficient and friendly and provided emengency kit. Alitalia forget it, didn't have a clue for 4 days where my luggage was, but luckily I had the idea of asking them to check their luggage room myself ( you end up knowing how things work...) and there was my luggage, fully tagged

I lost a bag forever

Going from Denver to Disneyland with a 2 year old son and wife. Good flight, and on landing went to retreve our bags. All but 1 bag out of 5 showed up. Eventually, a bag of the same namebrand and color came around the conveyor belt. It wasn't ours.

My wife lost all her holiday clothes plus baby clothes and supplies. United assured us they would the deliver the correct bag once it showed up...It never did. I believe somebody ended up with ladies clothes, baby powder and diapers. Don't know their personal taste, but they never returned it. We got around $800:00 for the contents of the bag...

I've been travelling for work quite a bit for the last 18 years along with a healthy dose of personal travel. In that time, I've only had missing bags 3 times.

1) Bags remained on the plane and went to Anchorage without me, but were returned the next morning.

2) I missed my connection and was rolled over to the next flight, though the luggage was not (maybe they were looking for the flight that I missed).

3) Coming back from the carribbean, we were delayed in PHL for three hours by thunderstorms. Upon arrival, once the belt stopped we were informed that three carts of bags were left on the ground in PHL (despite the extra three hours to load...the plane was there the whole time). The worst part in that instance was the utter lack of communication regarding my bag (I ended up just going to the airport and retrieving it myself late the next day).

I am not a fan of carrying everything on board. I hate the rush to get on to secure overhead space. I don't know if I'm lucky or less stressed about handing bags over, but I think I've had a pretty good track record.

Latest report I read said that airlines in the USA lose about 1% of the checked luggage. Varies quite a bit from line to line. It's become worse over the past few years.

Pass the Buck

I'll refer to the title subject in para #3 because its tread creep.

Whilst I have never had anything lost, I have had delayed luggage but fortunately when arriving home and Ansett delivered it asap off the next flight. MAS was late leaving BKK and on reaching KL the cabin crew asked all passengers to remain seated except those with connections to Oz and all Perth passengers to immediately identify themselves to ground staff at the top of the air bridge. The baggage never stood a chance with a less than 15 mins transfer, but full marks to somebody who did the forward thinking.

Earlier this year my daughter traveled Kalgoorlie to Heathrow with Qantas, between Kal and Perth they managed to rip the handle off her new suitcase. Now seamless travel does not "seam" to exist between regional Oz and the rest of the "One World" so she reclaims bag at domestic and reports the damage. Reply the transfer bus is about to leave, so report the damage over the other side at International. Reports said damage at International. Reply, leave it 'till you get to London, it might be worse by then! Finally at Heathrow she is given a claim form with instructions to claim it was damaged Perth-London, but "I don't want to lie and get the wrong people into trouble". No that's too complicated, just do as I say and we will send some one to collect your case for repair. A few days later a courier arrives at her address in Yeovil and collects the case and about a week later returns it badly repaired. She complains again after all it was new and now looks very 2nd hand. Ok we will replace it, courier returns with an inferior case. Complains again your replacement is worth about 40 pounds mine cost nearly 80. Sorry that's all we can replace it with......that wont do.....oh well in that case we will collect it and send you a cheque. So eventually she's 80 quid better off but with a very 2nd hand useably case.
