Alicante - luggage theft/damage problems?

Alicante - luggage theft/damage problems?
Is anyone aware of a particular problem with theft from/damage to luggage at Alicante Airport?
Earlier this week a close relative of mine and his family arrived at Bristol (BRS) from Alicante (ALC) on a My Travel flight (operated by Skyservice) to find that when he collected his main suitcase from the carousel it had been slashed by the use of something like a Stanley knife. The case is wrecked and much of the contents were exposed and hanging out. Some items are missing.
Two other families on this flight, not connected with my relative, also had luggage damaged in a similar way. The matter was reported to the handling agents at BRS and the necessary documentation completed.
The BRS airport duty manager commented that this problem was becoming “ridiculous” and “always on the Alicante flights.” Several airlines, both charter and scheduled, operate into BRS from ALC. As I wasn’t there I don’t know whether the duty manager was referring just to MYT flights from ALC or to flights from there in general.
