Fares doubled
Prices for business pax australia europe have doubled. Qantas at a$ 21000 ukp £10k one way.

There's a couple of Brits stuck in Thailand who say there is nothing on offer for the next two weeks, they had turned down a one way flight via Japan at ten thousand pounds each.

It is never cheap to book any flight when the booking date is close to the travel date.
Searching 'Google Flights' availability opens up (and prices drop) from about 18 March onwards for bookings on airlines that do not schedule a stopover in the Gulf.
I wish your friends the very best of luck in finding affordable flights home.

We've got backup on SQ.
EYEWATERING prices but not as much as getting stuck in Dubai with no insurance.
Will play it by ear and look foward to arguing with airlines, credit card companies & insurers for the rest of 2026.
Still better off than everyone in the Gulf and Iran

I have one young freind stuck in DXB who seems to be doing ok, and she is out with my ex colleagues from our office there currently doing a bottomless brunch having spent a week there between trying to get a flight, and topping up tan and seeing sights.
This war thing is obviously quite tough !!
Another somewhat older couple I know have been in Australia and NZ and were due to come up to Bangkok to meet another old school chum, but have decided to skip Bangkok and head for home via Canada or US. They were due to come back through DXB. I don't think they were really ready for SE Asia though as this was their first trip outside of Europe and to be polite they are a little conservative with a small c and can be prone to winning Pom. I guess it depends how risk averse you are ?
A quick update the young lady is on the Red Eye with 03.00am departure. My older friend's are routing through Japan back to UK with the comment that the world’s too big they think, the opera in Verona is far enough.
Don’t ask, some get old some just give up 😂😂😂

Flights via the USA are quite expensive from OZ - well they were two days ago. They're also very long AND you have to get a transit visa of course. Qantas offered that option as did ANZ. Qantas are also offering flights via South Africa - which aren't terribly costly but the time........

I suppose that I was thinking more in terms of people getting 'home', even if it means a bit of a trek, as a break in the journey for a day or so can be a nice diversion. Obviously cost is a factor for most......I suppose that atm what with drones still flying about the UAE area, it's an unknown risk and Sod's Law etc etc.

It gets smaller all the time. It used to amaze me that I could buy a ticket in the US or theUk that would take me to the ends of the world AND IT WORKED.
The 45 hour non-stop trip back from Tahiti at the start of Covid (our weekend break
) rather proved the point.
But when you get there people are all wearing the same T-shirts, supporting the same football teams, eating in the same fast food places and using the same electronics. Wasn't like this in Magellan or Capt Cook's time.
Sometimes it's stranger in Cornwall or London than in the Gilbert & Ellice Isles

Slightly off topic but my Dad was due to fly back with Qatar from Melbourne to BHX yesterday. Flights obviously cancelled but trying to rebook is impossible as you can't get through to them on the phone or via chat and it won't let me do it online. He is 83 and needs assistance so I can't just route him via multiple stops to get him home. Fortunately he can stay at my sister's for a while longer but I have to say Qatar have been terrible. The advertised telephone number to call them from Australia also doesn't work
