Question flying wherever

I am an SLF who is transported to various places including in Africa and South Asia. Many airlines in these regions have standards of safety, service and timeliness that are comparable to standards elsewhere in the world.

Other airlines may not necessarily attain comparable quality. Whatever the airline, I have always felt completely confident in the flight crew. However, sometimes I think about the quality of the aircraft maintenance.

How do I evaluate the quality of maintenance and safety for airlines in these regions?

I have only had one bad experience. Flying through a generous African storm in francophone central Africa, the 737-200 hit an air pocket (almost 2 seconds fall or am I imagining it?) and seemed to struggle to maintain power.

I recently flew with an Asian regional carrier on a wet-leased Ukrainian registered Yak-42. Seemed OK but I stand to be corrected.

Well, I've been in turbulence at FL370 in an A320 and only just been able to maintain altitude in Europe - not the tropics. I suspect that's nothing to do with maintenance.
