Some of our newer posters here will not know that TightSlot was senior cabin crew with Air NZ for many years. So he knows his stuff and the points he makes are top level information.

The survivors spent between one and a half and two and a half hours in the water.

On 19 June 1954, Swissair Convair CV-240HB-IRW ditched into the English Channelbecause of fuel starvation, which was attributed to pilot error. All three crew and five passengers survived the ditching and could escape the plane. However, three of the passengers could not swim and eventually drowned, because there were no life jackets on board, which was not prescribed at the time.
