Flying back as well

Still ultra nervous, as someone said I don't like it when the engines sound as if they are dying off

Likewise, when approaching for landing, you will hear the engines 'perk up' a bit before the actual touch down. All normal.

Regarding engine noise - Have you ever wondered how far an aircraft will travel without engines? Like if they fell off? Or just stopped working? The answer is miles, typically three miles per thousand feet. Some will do four. From the cruise, it might take 20 to 25 minutes to descend to the ground and in that time cover 120 - 150 miles. So from the cruise overhead Birmingham you could glide to Manchester, Heathrow, Gatwick, Liverpool, Teesside, Southend, Southampton, Exeter, Cardiff just to name a few. All without a drop of fuel! Apart from the (lack of) noise of the engines and the change in the deck angle you wouldn't know you are descending. Given the choice though, we leave them on and just put the engines in idle.

But engines are responsible for some of the noises an aircraft can make. Large ones are effectively mobile hotels complete with water systems, light, heat, electricity, bars, kitchens. The biggest difference is not everybody gets a comfortable bed and you can't leave even if you really want to. It also moves around a bit more than your average hotel.

Have a glass of wine, have a Xanax, sit back and enjoy it. The views are ace - so get a window seat.

I used to get scared of flying sometimes - I've done hundreds and hundreds of flights now.

I'm now more scared of boorish idiot fellow passengers with no manners.
