Qatar Airways

I fly Qatar Airways a great deal, Platinum Privilege Club, and have noticed the premium section price has increased by an average of 100%. Does anyone know the reason for this, or just the airline having to 'stand on its own 2 feet?'

Yield management, basic supply and demand. They will charge what they can get away with, simple as that.

Check other sources for their prices. It is little understood that an airline can charge their "Club" members more than their non-Members. If you are using their 'exclusive' web portal, you may not be quoted their best price, or all of their available fares.

The same can be true of their partners (hotels/rental cars/etc) 'exclusive' pages accessed from the airline's "Club" pages.

Indeed, prices for services available via a click through from an airline website are rarely good value compared to spending oooh 30 seconds searching on the web for the same service independently.

On the other hand, a "holiday" booking, with a hotel or a car thrown in along with the air fare can often cost less than the flight booked by itself - particularly if you are prepared to sit in one of the rear cabins.

TBH if you have a load of airmiles through your "loyalty" Card they know you have a stronger likelhood of booking with them anyway compared to Joe Schmo who they know nothing about ...

guess who will get the best price.......

I'm platinum card also, to book I book it independent on the Qatar airways website after removing cookies on my computer. I do an initial search using the option "I'm a guest/not a card holder", then return after getting rid of cookies.
See the difference then book the best deal for me.

They don't need cookies. You logged in on the 'premium' page using your secret code. They know who you are, what your spend is, your flight history and probably the frequency of little blue pills that you take.

Until you log out, they've got you by the short and curlies.

Since they already know that you are more likely to spend more, as you are an addict, they can charge you more.

Use a neutral site like Matrix - ITA Software by Google to find all the fares your chosen airline has available for the dats/times you want. Then use that information to buy from the airline or an agent. It might cost you a phone call (as you can't buy everything online) but you can save considerably.

I had a recent survey from Qatar and one of the questions asked was related to ticket purchasing, wanting to know if we bought as a first preference or only special offers.

I would guess that those who only bought the cheap fares would continue to receive them as they would simply go else where, and those who listed first preference could be charged a bit more as they had indicated a willingness to pay.

Just had another email advising changes in award miles, basically the miles accrued on the bargain basement tickets have been reduced and they can't be upgraded with miles at all. However miles required to be flown to retain a status level have been reduced.

The airlines are on a high at the moment, low fuel costs and high demand keeps their prices high and discounts low. Profits are up and senior management bonuses too.

If we have anything to learn from history it is that this is not sustainable. This too will pass.

When looking for deals based on price, I never identify myself, frequently delete cookies and switch between FF and IE. Of them all, I suspect BA's cookies are the smartest.

AO, it doesn't matter if they have the smartest cookies if people like me refuse to go anywhere near their website. They treated me so poorly in the past with nonexistent damage control I refuse to go anywhere near them.

I'd gladly pay more if it doesn't involve BA

Sadly I have to agree- they are going down the route that so many US airlines have trodden
