idiosyncrasies

Air Canada say check in opens on line 24 to 1 hour before departure. My flight is at 1010 tomorrow so I went online this morning only to discover my connecting flight isn't open yet so please come back later. It's still 24 hours before departure of the connecting but I've just managed to check in for both flights (and I appear to be the first for the onward flight!).

Based on previous comments here I believe British Airways allow check in 24 hours before the first flight - don't have to wait for the connecting to open. Ryanair allow check in weeks, not hours in advance.

How many variations on a theme are there?

I had a strange one last week.

Going to SZG via FRA from DUB with LH. Went online 23 hours (that's when LH's online check in opens and checked in for both even though the SZG flight wasn't due to open for another four hours so if you've a connecting flight you can check in for both of them even if the second flight is outside the 23 hour window.

On the way back, same route, I checked in for both flights more than 24 hours before (was going out for the evening and chanced my arm at the hotel before I left. So even though LH say online check in opens 23 hours that night I did it more than 24 hours in advance, again for both flights. No idea how. Was using their app on my phone. Maybe that has something to do with it although I can't see anything online about earlier opening for app users.

Idiosyncrasies indeed.

Point to point airlines have a much simpler booking system as it doesn't need to deal with online and interline connecting flights. Having a single aircraft type/configuration means that an aircraft substitution can be dealt easily.

Network airlines need to deal with both types of connecting flights as well as code shared flights and need to follow industry standard procedures to deal with this process. In theory the network airlines could have different rules for different type of journeys, but that would't be less confusing, would it?

I had trouble checking in for KLM which opens 30 hours prior to the flight and was told to contact technical support. I think that the problem was that I ticked the box to check in for the return flight the day after my outbound flight. There was no problem when I just checked in for the outbound flight, but the site could have been clearer and indeed what the problem was.
