Without reading the story - taking a sleeping pill on a flight is VERY stupid. If there is an emergency, you might not wake up, or when you do, be unable to properly understand instructions or follow them.

If you are travelling alone, it is VERY, VERY stupid.

Since pax have learnt to think of an airplane ride as 'easy' and 'every day', some pax will do this kind of thing. That does not excuse whatever happened but someone has to tell pax not to do stupid things. Which is a task that will take until the ends of time...

Why question HA? Not sure what their resposibility was here. Title should be stupid passenger.

The PIA incident is an interesting combinations of failures:
  • Misguided pax
  • Failure by CC to have her removed at CDG
  • Failure by Ground staff to removed her at CDG
  • Failure by new CC to have her removed before departure
Consequently, there is probably part of the story missing.

Yes, the missing part is that the CDG arrival and subsequent departure is timetabled as a through flight from Milan/Malpensa (PK734 MXP-CDG-LHE).

I don't know whether the Italian-originating pax would have stayed on board the aircraft during the 1:20 stop at CDG, but if so that could well have accounted for the one extra pax being overlooked (though it doesn't excuse the absence of a headcount).

Just heard this story on the BBC Radio 4. And you will not be surprised to learn that one aspect of the story reported in the Times of India:

When the plane took off from Paris for Lahore, Ahmed woke up and realized she was going back to Pakistan. She raised an alarm and asked the crew to take her back to Paris. She was told her request could not be entertained and she was asked to stay calm.
Radio 4 said that, when se woke up and realised where she was and what was happening - she kept quiet and did not say anything until she arrived back at Lahore.

Also, there was no mention in the radio report of a sleeping pill. However, I have to say that, irrespective of whether she caused a row or not - a sleeping pill seems likely to have been involved - due to events that did NOT wake her up.

There's an identical and longer thread in Spectator's Gallery.
