Last updated 2003, so check before you try to smoke 'n' fly with one of the airlines that purportedly did in 2003 !

not a problem for me, I was just curious. If that's the best info out there, then I guess the answer is no.

A friend who travels a lot to Japan tells me smoking is still allowed there in aircraft

JAL were one of the last major longhaul carriers to ban smoking (as I believe they've now done) - it wouldn't surprise me if they still allow it on internal flights. Some of my former colleagues used to do Oz trips on JAL because they couldn't face 14 hours without a coffin nail.
