Well I should update this - as mentioned previously BA managed to get the bags couriered back to us within 24 hours. We managed to speak to someone in the Newcastle call centre about the hopeless situation re information at JFK and, to their credit, BA have apologised and sent vouchers! My faith in their customer service has been restored as they kept in touch by email and seemed genuinely to want to sort the problem out. I have to say this was all we wanted them to do and were not expecting anything else.
Good move as I now feel more inclined to book another flight with them...!
