Unusual security query...
Evening All,
Im hoping someone in the know can help me with my query. I am flying with girlfriend to Rome next month for a city break. I am going to propose to her whilst we are in Rome.
My question is where is best to pack the ring to avoid having her suprise blown by setting off the scanner at airport security?
Working in aviation I should know better but there again i'm military & ive never proposed before!!!
Thanks in advance,
BD

Paxing All Over The World
Hey tezzer, find some romance in the world? Yeah, those of us that have been round the block might have a cynical moment but remember the lines ...
Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment – it is as perennial as the grass.
from The Desiderata
All the best big_dawg, Rome is a fabulous city (for about three days max!!) so it should be good. Don't expect your cases to arrive on the belt in less than 40 mins after doors open. So put the time to good use.

Just put it in your carry-on bag and keep your carry-on contents uncomplicated (no lots of wires, don't wrap wires (like headphones) around things (like iPods), no things stacked on top of each other, do remember to take all your liquids out, avoid organics like apples, cheese, spare batteries, etc). Put your keys/phone/pens/etc/etc in a jacket pocket and not into the bag.
That sort of thing will make it unlikely the security staff will feel the need to search your bag. Just a ring won't be reason to search your bag. Good luck with the proposal

Está servira para distraerle.
Are you planning on giving your girl friend a ring with a stone set in base metal? As far as my experience in matters of bling goes, white gold, yellow gold and platinum do not set off the buzzers. But if you're slipping her a stainless steel cubic zircona then just develop the need for a lavatory visit land side of security, slip her a £20 note and tell her you'll see her at duty free, darling. Thus you go through separately. Blinded by the scent of perfumes extraordinary she will fall for the ruse especially if you've been moaning about your wibbly wobbly gut on the way to the airport.

unless the ring is the size of a doughnut keep it in your pocket if you get stopped as a random just ask for a private search, you won't be refused.
Take the good advice about hand luggage, you're far less likely to get a random check of that and then play the private search thing as a last resort if they do.
Paid...Persona Grata
AND - to avoid your trip getting spoiled - keep a close watch on wallets, purses and the like. Two hours in a plod station queueing to log your pocket having been picked is less than romantic.
