After years of flying for a large carrier I was made redundant at the end of the '90's and ever since have been flying corporate/VVIP. I can't really remember any good excuses from the airline, and nowadays reckon on being late for a job about once a year. However, my customers these days tend to be very rich and very powerful. They arrive at the aircraft when they are ready, with strange guests and then tell us they must take a conference call, and then throw teddy when they can't go as soon as they put the phone down because we have now missed our slot and are trying to re-arrange it.
One of them once phoned ATC at an airfield we had just landed at and screamed at ATC because we had been in the hold for 20 minutes. He screamed even more when the phone was firmly slammed down. Trouble was he had been very late at New York due to a party the night before, we then were late at destination and were stuffed into the hold in vile weather, whle ATC sorted out the mess. He was so used to everyone smoothing his path he couldn't take being treated the same as everyone else, he had paid for the private jet and thought that should take him to the head of the queue.
