Seems to be confusion over the aircraft type - first article says 747, the second says 757. Which was it?

What aircraft was it?

AA doesn't operate the B747 - it was likely the 757, but knowing the media it could have been an ATR72!

From a thread on Airliners.net it definitely was a B757.
