Sitting in the cone of a 747

Who enjoys sitting in the cone of a 747? There is no better was to fly than sitting in the cone, especially an Air New Zealand which is like sitting in a private jet and having no one in close promity to you. However I have met lods of pax that much prefer the UD which I detest - horses for courses I guess.

There is an amusing story about the famous New Zealand author Janet Frame and Air New Zealand. She flew NZ regulary and one year as a treat her and Sister decided to fly First Class. Janet did not enjoy the experience as she could not hear the engines!

I will be sitting in 2A on my next NZ flight to LAX. I am thinking of changing it to 1A which is considered the best seat in the house

I'm assuming that you mean the very first seat in the 747 on the main deck. I certainly do not like that particular seat! I was in 1B on an SQ flight SIN/SFO, the thought of spending hours there filled me with dread (even taking into account the excellent SQ service!). One very nice gentleman immediately offered to swap seats with me (cabin was full).

The beauty of that very front seat in F class on SQ, on the B744, is that no one needs to walk past you etc. Meal times can be arranged and it is a bit like having the whole flight to yourself! I did hear that some Chinese didn't like it because sitting there , right in the front. with the screen in front, reminded them of a funeral parlour. The Chinese have very definite views about death.

I like it because it's as close as one can get to a view forward. You could charge a fortune for a seat with a true forward view, with optical glass methinks.

BA sensational

1A or 1K of you're on your own. 2E&F if you're with a partner is a superb experience. and then you can get lucky as we did once - only 3 of us in F from LHR to NRT - Japanese man in 1A slept for the entire journey. Friendly BA cabin staff gave us run of the cabin. Meals in 3EF, takeoff and landing in 2,3K, beds made up in 4 E,F. FANTASTIC trip and great staff!
