LH to Pune

A very interesting choice of destination. I wonder what made LH choose Pune ? I know that it is pretty big in population terms, would'nt be surprised if it was about 4 or 5 million in the metro area.
Pune is not very far from Mumbai and there are reasonably good rail links between the cities , but it is not really close enough to be considered as an airport to serve the Greater Mumbai area.
We all know how how Bangalore and Hyderabad have developed so rapidly over the past few years. Is Pune another Deccan success story ?

Would be interesting to know how Pune has come on since I visited the city back in 95 !

A lot of business traffic to/from Pune.

PrivatAir will operate the route on behalf of Luthansa.

Pune is a 4 hour journey from Mumbai and is a centre for education, IT development (feeding off the intellectual output of the education system), and manufacturing.

Mercedes manufacture in the Pune region and Volkswagen have/are about to start production there.

All congratulations to Lufthansa for spotting the niche and gaining the traffic rights, and PrivatAir seems to be the perfect partner to develop this specialist operation. This will be the first and currently the only long haul flight from PNQ.

Volkswagen AND Mercedes !

It's certainly come on since I was last there, when it was either (Austin) Ambassadors or Maruti Suzuki's !

In any case, I can't see too many business class passengers wanting to travel on Indian trains!

Indian trains are fine if you've got a reservation (which wouldn't be much use of course if your flight was late), but even with a reservation, they're not exactly up to business class standards of luxury.

I'm not disputing the merits of Pune as a business destination, but it's popular with tourists too. Why have business class only?

Pune and Bangalore are the German bridgeheads in India. There are at least 400 subsidiaries of German companies in the Pune area, mostly automotive tier 2's, light machining and engineering.

As costs in B'lore go through the roof ( currently 400 €/m2 for industrial property = higher than in Germany ) many German companies are thinking to move to greener ( cheaper ) pastures further North. Pune is great and has a good technical skill base.

Congrats to LH to have spotted this niche!
