Frankfurt Security!!!

pm 20th Mar at Frankfurt, now rapidly becoming an airport that makes Heathrow look well-planned and user friendly.....

BA from the new, unfinished T2, wait at Gate E3..5 minutes before closure time, with little action evident, gate change to D1, calling for a route march through the building works.

Get there, long queue at D gate area security, eventually security staff start processing people through, very slowly and zealously, eg passports taken out of pockets because their metal strip set off the AMD, and sent through the X-ray separately to make sure they didn't contain a machine-gun.

Then, guess what, about 100 passengers are led through into the area via a door to the side of the security screening area, without going through security. It's another gate change in progress but they are in a hurry, the BA pax surmise, and laugh rather than cry.

One elderly gent finds it's all too much and asks the security muppets why they are bothering, when 100 people have just been led straight past them.

Chief Muppet immediately threatens him with being banned from flying for showing dissent, and then shows that his grasp of the concept of secure and insecure areas is a bit fragile by explaining "when they get to their gate they will be screened for security".

Which only goes to show that airport security muppets have the same rather low IQ the world over.

T2 security at FRA does take longer to pass through than T1, there is also a double layer for certain destinations. Generally, I avoid T2.

I pass through FRA a lot, it's my main airport and I have to say that I've found the security staff to be professional, polite and thorough. I've never witnessed any of them be less than polite, let alone unreasonable or abusive.

To compare FRA, in a bad light, to LHR is laughable. FRA is a reasonably efficient airport. LHR is not.

I've found FRA security to be useless muppets. They took a double ended 4BA/2BA spanner from me - a piece of metal with no sharp edges and under 3 inches long! However, a pair of tweezers with sharp points 6 inches long passed without comment. They also wanted my belt removed. When asked if they took responsibility for my trousers coming down, they didn't know what to say.....I lost a lot of weight in hospital last year. Unfortunately, it's going back on - insulin and steroids are a great way to increase weight.

Can't comment on FRA but my last four trips through LHR have been totally stress free and fast, including the fingerprinting and photographing when transiting T3/T1. Security has been speeded up tremendously. I'm not LHR's number one fan but let's give a little credit where it's due chaps.

FRA

I pass through FRA security at least 10 times a year since the late 90s and never had bad experiences (both T1 and T2). The guys and girls can even be funny sometimes, if you adress them the right way....

Best regards
