Nudist flights - what happens in an emergency?

The news about a German travel agent offering specialist (domestic) flights for naturists was on BBC R4 this morning (Reuters). My intention is not to start a sniggering thread (feel free to snigger if you wish), but my first thought (which probably shows my age ) was: what happens if an emergency evacuation is required?

I've heard stories of holiday flights full of folks in shorts and t-shirts that had to carry out an evacuation via the escape chutes, resulting in numerous friction burns to legs and arms. If all the pax were naked, the results don't bear thinking about! Any comments (serious or otherwise) from cabin crew?

Lifejacket drill?

Well, I suppose you could always start by putting the lifejacket on, er, upside down to protect one's dangly bits . . .

Cool

This all sounds like a great way to get free publicity for the tour operator. It's like RYRs latest clever advert that got them many minutes of prime time TV and radio coverage for free.

On a practical note ... in order to avoid problems during an emergency evacuation, the pax would not be able to disrobe until cruise altitude had been reached. Likewise, all would have to dress before TOD. Since most folks would want to do so in the aisle, it would take some time to get everyone dressed. It really cannot be worth the effort and I speak as a naturist myself.

I would have thought that airports would have welcomed the idea, with everyone naked before going through security!

In the event of an emergency it would be much easier to kiss your AE goodbye

Each to their own..
But can they really not just wear clothes until they get to their destination? And it isn't very NATURAL to be flying in a massive jet is it...

This has been done before in the states of all places :-

http://www.naked-air.com/

Look at your own risk - some shocking sights on there !!!

Clothes are worn for take off and landing, when things are most likely to go wrong, but once a cruise altitude, then off goes the seat belt sign, and off come the clothes. Very few things can go wrong at cruise altitude that wouldn't give people time to get dressed again before having to go down the chutes - and those things usually wouldn't result in use of chutes anyway.

Can't say I saw anything shocking on there. All the pics I looked at show men & wimmen with all the same wobbly bits as any other men & wimmen. I don't really see what the big deal is about nudism. In warmer parts of the world. Not 100% sure its something I'd feel comfortable doing, but don't see the problem with folks who are comfortable doing it.

Sounds like the German lot haven't thought it through very carefully yet.

I think that the pax should be very careful when accepting a cup of tea or coffee as the risk of burns to ones bits and bobs makes my eyes water! I think its a great idea and maybe its one that BA could adopt to enter a new niche market.

Don't tell Michael O'Leary or else he'll want to start charging pax £10 a time if they turn up at check-in wearing clothes.

ferrytickles - fully concur. There is a silly schoolboy humour surrounding nudism, but there we go.

My only experience of naturism was a beach near Frejus many moons ago while I was backpacking as I lad. I stumbled across this nudist beach and was incredibly embarrassed since I wouldn't take my kit off because I was scared my willy would get sunburnt!

On the contrary, I think the German travel agency have thought it through very well. How much would all that publicity have cost to buy?

angels Don't worry - they don't. Like any part of your body, you need to be careful. If the sun is severe, then put on a higher factor sun block. Now cue the school boy jokes about applying sun cream on a naturist beach.

Personally It isn't my cup of tea.. But I respect those that do wish to do it.
As long as they don't make me

Thread drift:

Isn't it funny how people say things like
As long as they don't make me
Do you mean that in the same way as if a bunch of golfing enthusiasts tried to drag people onto the course and make them play?

My school tried to force me in to football and I demonstrated that I did not like the game and was not going to play.

In what way could anyone force you to do something that you don't want to do? Like in a Police state...? (I'm trying to find the most suitable 'smiley' but I can't make up my mind)

Wink

I don't mean to generalise, but in my limited exposure (fnaar
!) to naturists, why is it they are all relatively overweight, and not so good looking.

If I was going to walk about (or catch a flight!) in the buff, I'd hit the gym and the fake tan.

Ah well, 10secs, I know your postings of long standing and you always make sense so I know that you are being a tad mischievous here.

The explanation about those who do, and do not, go nude is all linked to personal history, the culture we grew up in and our own personality. The reasons are many faceted and no stereotypes exist. One exception - I have never seen people with fake tan. Of course, there may well be, but folks who want to get an all over tan, don't need the fake!

I have seen every shape and size of body at naturist beaches and clubs. There is no limit - from those that could be on the cover of exotic magazines, to folks in their 80s grey hairs and all.

At the risk of offending my good friend PAXboy , I can't resist quoting Jeremy Hardy from last week's Radio 4 'News Quiz' when this topic was discussed:
Naturism is like amateur dramatics. Those who are most enthusiastic for it are generally the ones least worth watching.

Despite "tremendous demand" the flight has been cancelled - and guess what? The organiser supposedly has "second thoughts whether this is morally justifiable"...

*rofl*
