Sporting Equipment Checked Baggage

Another question about baggage. Having perused the BA website, I see that sporting equipment can be checked in for free in addition to the standard two items.
My question is this - if I'm taking ski boots and a helmet with me can I put them into a larger bag which is easily secured (and would only contain skiing hardware), or do I check the boots in the boot bag and the helmet in my normal luggage.

I would ask BA themselves, but after 20 mins on hold I got tired of waiting...
