APD to double from February

"Chancellor Gordon Brown has put green issues at the heart of his Pre-Budget Report, with motorists and air travellers hit by a hike in taxes.

The Chancellor has announced a 1.25p rise in fuel duty, taking effect from midnight tonight, ending a three-year freeze on the tax.

Meanwhile, air passenger duty for most flights will double from February 1 next year, rising from £5 to £10."

Thanks very much Gordon!

David Cameron [leader of the opposition party for non-uk readers] must be feeling very pleased with himself today. His 'green' credentials and people's enthusiasm for them, have ensured that Brown could take this action with almost zero political risk.

That's right, lets hit the buggers again. Aviation is an easy target for politictions and their "green" agenda.

Hi,

And if you are going long haul in a cabin above economy ( ie premium economy) then the APD goes up from £40 to £80!

Regards

Hey ho, another aviation tax just doubled. Just rolls off Gordon's tongue.

Interesting that in the detail it states how much extra revenue will be raised from this, just double what the current tax take is from this duty. So they expect nobody to be deterred from flying at all by it, which completely makes their claim about it being a green tax to be seen for what it is. A lie.

The amount of extra tax will, partially, compensate for the VAT being fraudulently claimed by criminals in what is known as "Carousel Fraud", to do with export goods, which has suddenly become an issue this year. It is presumably easier to get the money back from Joe Public than from the perpetrators. By the way, if you want to know how Carousel Fraud is done read Branson's autobiography, he describes how in the early days of Virgin Records they, initially inadvertently, got into this.
