Of course, if you decide that you're going to discount all the reports of problems on the basis that they're only apocryphal stories, and also discount the research which demonstrates how mobiles can cause the problems reported, then I suspect you'll be waiting a long time.

In fact, if there really is a problem with mobiles, I suspect that the first "documented case" may well be the subject of a big AAIB report.

I hope there isn't a problem with them, and I hope that there is never such a report. But I always thought that air safety wasn't about waiting for someone to suffer a real problem before taking any action.

All we have to do is wait until a picocell fails or is inadvertently switched off mid-flight. Dozens of mobiles will all ratchet up to full power (2W) in a (probably futile) attempt to contact the nearest active cell 35,000 feet below.

What will be the result? My guess is nothing at all untoward, but I'd prefer not to be on board when it happens.

Precisely my point. Where is the research documented? Where are all these "reports of problems"? Not hearsay, not a pal told me, or somebody said, or I read it on PPRuNe, but scientific, documented, official reports.
