What did I see?

I was on a Pittsburgh to Detroit flight on Monday night Jan 23rd (about 8:30 pm). On the aproach to 27L out of the east, From 30,000 down to 10,000 there was a VERY bright orange light visible on the ground, far north of the city. Hard to tell how far, but I'm gussing it was somewhere near Sarnia or the Saginaw Bay area if my perception serves me correctly. If this was a fire, it was HUGE, but I doubt it.
Anyone who knows that area have any ideas what that was?

..sorry, don't believe in UFO's so don't use that one

I am pleased to see that you do not believe in UFOs or other supernatural events and wish to have a scientific explanation.

What you saw was either an electrical light or the flames from a furnace or similar.

Is there a refinery in the area? Sounds similar to what you can see
on approach to EDI sometimes, and that's the flare at Mossmoran.

Sarnia Ont., is the refinery "capital" of Canada. Nothing on the news about any fire there so you probably just saw the normal burn off, which varies from a small flame to a kin great torch.
