RIM (Blackberry) patent for personal electronics in-flight

Research in Motion (responsible for the ubiquitous 'Crackberry') have patented a system that would allow an onboard signal to put all enabled personal electronic devices (mobile phones) into a "flight mode" that will not interfere with aircraft electronic systems. You can read the patent in full here.
I can imagine this being useful to quiesce mobiles that have been left on inadvertently, but of course it won't work until aircraft and electronic devices are suitably equipped!
