Cancun after the hurricane - any news?

I'm sure that at present our hearts go out to the local people who are trying to survive in the wreckage of their city, but Cancun's longterm prosperity must depend upon the longterm future of Cancun as a holiday resort.

Just how badly has the tourist area been trashed? Has all the beach really gone? How much of the sandspit remains? What might the timescale be?

How about Xcaret, how's that looking?

If you have any news, please write it here.

Last report as of this morning in the US is that there are over 20,000 tourists stranded in Cancun. Most are from the US, however, there are many from Great Britain and Europe.

All hotels are reporting major damage and major beach erosion. President Fox claimed that Cancun will be back to 80 to 90% recovered by the Christmas season. However the Mayor of Cancun is not so optimistic.

Only time will tell.
