Can you be more specific? When are you going? For how long? And what prices have you been quoted?

Need to go middle of Nov for 10 days. Best price so far is £600 with Cathay.

As I'm going with the wife, £600 suddenly looks very expensive

Touchdown were offering £450 with JAL. But no spaces left

american-airlines.co.uk have a BA/QF combination for £569 from the 10th to the 20th.

ba.com will sell you the same thing for over £600. Go figure

qantas.co.uk will send you via FRA for almost £700. Sigh.

lufthansa.co.uk aren't worth bothering with unless you want to spend thousands.

virginatlantic.co.uk is around £650 each.

EK are £700 each.

expedia.co.uk has CX flights at £550 each, SQ at £670 and a multitude of other things at higher prices.

Most of the spare capacity in the world's carriers has been removed. The more indirect the route, the more stops and/or changes of a/c - and yet going through with one ticket - the more the price comes down!

If these prices include tax, they're actually pretty good for Sydney. The £550 fare for CX that I can see (Travelbag) is £386 + tax. The next fare that they seem to be offering is on QF, for £480 + tax = £616. It's pretty rare to be able to get to Sydney for less than £500 at any time of the year, particularly when fuel surcharges are as high as they are at the moment.
