Delta

I'm off to San Francisco in a couple of weeks flying from Manchester to Atlanta and then on to SFO. Has anybody got any info as to what i should expect on a Delta flight???? I have only flown to the States once before and that was a pretty uneventful Manchester to JFK.

Cheers
Bri

Cool Delta ???

You're going to ride on Delta Airlines ? Why would you wonder what to expect ? It's an airplane ride. Get on board, keep your feet off the furniture, don't give the F/A's any crap, don't be drunk ( I threw many people off the airplane in my 30+ years as a Delta pilot...you cannot be on board if you even "appear to be intoxicated"...FAR's ). It's just like being on any other airline.

Bafanguy, thanks for your reply. I suppose this thread was a little pointless!?!?!? I was just wondering more about the aircraft themselves, are they relatively modern??

Don't do much transatlantic flying and could only really afford cattle class!!!!!

Any more views out there???

Smile FYI

In the past couple of years, most US airlines have tried to cut costs by targeting in-flight meals and drinks. Other US airlines have started charging economy-class pax on international flights about $5 per alcoholic beverage – I’m not sure about Delta, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they have instituted the same policy because they have stopped serving meals to domestic economy passengers (you’ll be able to purchase food on the flight from Atlanta to San Francisco).

Also, I’d make sure that you have at least a couple of hours for your transfer at ATL – especially because you’ll have to first pass through immigration and then travel to another concourse.

Enjoy San Francisco – it’s a beautiful (& unique!) city.

What a shame banafguy has to be so negitive on his comments. All Holbrob was trying to do was find out and compare what it's like to fly with Delta. If that was me I would be looking at flying BA/Virgin. At least you would get civil service and not have to queue for the toilet!!

Hi Bri,
Well, if I'm not mistaken you will be on a 767ER, which has 2-3-2 configuration in the main cabin. There is a charge for beer, wine and mixed drinks, they are $4.00 US each. Lunch will be served followed by a snack one hour from landing. As already stated, food for purchase is available on your ATL-SFO leg, and although I don't particularly enjoy selling to the passengers, I have to say the food is very fresh and good.

Personally I always enjoyed working MAN-ATL, it is usually full of families going on vacation, lots of surprisingly well-behaved children too. Have a wonderful trip!

CHINEY

You are a credit to your company.

BAFANGUY

If you really did work for Delta, you must have been one of the morons who gave them a bad reputation!

Thumbs up

Holbrob and Chiney, et al.,

I'm a Gold Medallion on Delta (from last year; will make Platinum in July, most likely), and am on them almost every week from work.

Delta has some issues, as does almost any US airline these days, but for the most part the experience is painless. Chiney's right that the flight will be a 767-300ER or 767-400 (what I was on a couple months back). The -400 is a fine aircraft, but most of the -300s are older, and in need of some upgrade (at least once a month I have a seat that automatically reclines for me).

Thanks to my medallion status, I'm able to fly first or business class most of the time, but do still fly coach occasionally. I can say without a doubt that the food for sale in coach is BETTER than the fare served in first class (though why that is I have no idea; I'd prefer the food for pay).

As for seating, if it is indeed a -300 and you're lucky, I'd suggest seats 27A or 27G. These are exit seats, and have no seat in front of them giving you a little room to stretch. I can tell you comfort wise that Delta is at least 50% better than US Airways, and 100% better than Northwest (which I just flew yesterday), IMHO.

Best of luck to you!

RD

My advice: Take your personal stereo.

I've no operational complaints with Delta - everything tends to be on time, crews are fine, etc. However...

I've flown transatlantic with most of them, and find the IFE is the biggest differentiator. In this regard, DL's 763s let them down. No seatback monitors, and the projector-screen was barely visible. Soundtrack was 1960s stethoscopes (air-powered headphones) - hence the above recommendation.

I'm more of a UAL fan - and at the risk of sounding like a trainspotter, Channel 9 on the headset beats any inflight movie!

When I flew with Delta last year I thought they were pretty decent bunch.

When I checked in at Gatwick I asked if I could possibly be allocated a window seat. The checkin agent was very apologetic in saying the window seats had all been booked but gave me the best alternative... a seat right at the front of coach with enough leg room to stretch my legs fully straight...

He also allocated my seat for the Atlanta to Miami connecting flight which happened to be the emergency exit seat with the seat in front removed... fantastic, a window seat and lots of leg room.

But not only that he had also booked my return flights MIA-ATL and ATL-LGW so that I had the window seats at the front of Coach with lots of legroom as well.

The flights themselves were all on time, the arrival into Atlanta was thirty minutes early despite a couple of holds at FL280 or whatever we were at inbound to ATL.

The inflight entertainment was pretty standard, music channels okay. They have a moving map system and inflight data system. Food was good with free beverages, but alcoholic beverages were extra. I don't drink before flying or during flight so that wasn't a problem for me.

Be warned about the immigration at Atlanta. We seemed to be the first European inbound for the day (or for several hours at least) so it was our flight at the front of the queue. But it still took me two and a half hours to pass through immigration. Probably because I had an M-1 visa for flight training they put me through "special processing" room (which also acts as a deportation room!).

By the time I got through, found my bag, re-submitted it to the connecting flights checkin... ran to the transit train from concourse E to Concourse A and then rang the entire pier to A2, I had 5 mintues to spare.... If my flight had been on time and not half an hour early then I probably would have missed it thus being put on the next available flight to Miami.

Delta seem pretty good... oh LGW to ATL and ATL to LGW were on Boeing 777's and ATL to MIA (and return) was on a Boeing 767-300. 777's had personal seat back videos (or arm rest videos) the 767-300 had a generic display for the cabin... but the ATL to MIA only took an hour and half and I was looking out of the window at the CB's towering above our FL330 (or whatever) thinking oh my god, I'm going to be doing my IR with these things around???

Best wishes,

Charlie Zulu.
