AMS yesterday?
Does anyone know anything about an alleged "incident" at AMS yesterday morning? Apparently a passenger got a loaded gun through security, and caused delays when spotted airside with the weapon, about to board an aircraft........
Doesn't seem to have appeared in the press.
Anyone got any more info?

Whatever it was our airport police which is the best in Europe probably handled it in a quick and safe manner.
Amsterdam Schiphol is the pride of Holland and the safest airport in Europe. Much safer than any French airport for example. And for one good reason: in continental Europe the Dutch way of thinking is the best there is: Logical and thorough.
It is KLM that should have bought Air France and not the other way around.

what a laugh!!! the best airport police and security at Schipol??? That will be the police who just walk through the security setting off every alarm and not getting searched then? many times not even having their passes checked, they could be anybody!! the airport that allows inbound and outbound passengers to mix so if anyone brings in some weapon from another country can be passed directly to someone else bypassing ALL security. The place is a security nightmare!!
As for Air France taking over KLM well its the best news i have heard! I really hope the French screw all the KLM pilots as you did the KLMuk pilots, you treated the ex KLMuk guys so appallingly giving them no rights, no seniority and trying to make a deal with the company that they would HAVE to leave at so many per year so as to replace them with Dutch pilots you deserve everything you get, it was blatant racism against these guys from the VNV.

Ahem... Through no fault of my own, I have ended up working for an airline created by "logical and thorough" people. Therefore, I believe a have good first hand knowledge of "Dutch" operations. It would be really easy (and very tempting) to start flinging Nationalist type insults, but I shalln't (ooh, go on please...). But I'm afraid you have shown us two major failings of people from that part of the world - Arogance and Inflexibility. In general, things work OK, like at every other first world airport. But security is generally performed by Mark I human beings and in AMS and no matter what the rules, errors will occur. But the cultural system makes errors highly likely because of the arrogance of many the managers. Watching the recovery from foul-ups takes some believing as well!

Iloveholland,
I'm ashamed to share your nationality.
I'm happy to be Dutch, but also happy to admit that security in AMS (and The Netherlands for that matter) has a LOT to learn from other countries....
And there's more we can learn from others, if we only tried.

To get back to the thread: Indeed no mention on any news chanels of what allegedly happened. Even if it did happen our troops captured the culprit.
I don't understand the palpable animosity towards The Netherlands and the Dutch. We employ lots of foreigners in the airline business here and although most of them have returned to their home countries, the ones left seems to like it ,are for the most part well adjuted and yes do seem to appreciate the logical and thoroughness of our open and tolerant society.
And I'll say it again: Amsterdam Schiphol airport IS the best airport in Europe. It should be pretty obvious to any pilot flying in as soon as they check in with Amsterdam Radar.

hmmmmmmmmm,
Why do I get the impression Iloveholland is not dutch at all or even loves holland? I seriously suspect him to be another KLM UK pilot who feels screwed over and tries to start a flame-war.

Interesting that this happens less then a month after ...

Selected extracts....
AMSTERDAM — A special police team set up to combat armed criminals operating at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport has been ordered by a court not to indiscriminately stop and search people in public areas of the airport.
<snip>
The court made its ruling on Wednesday as it freed a man, identified as Delano H., who was allegedly caught with a high-powered Glock 17 pistol by the police team in March 2003.
<snip>
On 19 January this year, the GBO squad caught another man with a concealed handgun in the main hall at Schiphol. Police received a tip off that one of a group of four people sitting in a Burger King restaurant was carrying a gun. When police arrived on the scene, the suspect made a dash for it.

This doesn't refer to AMS, execpt, that i've never been asked for id when im doing an A/C change, could board any old a/c and never stopped. Im am interested to hear if anyone has any other problems at other airports. I personnally have had most problems not @ AMS but NCE. i have had pax boarding with corkscrews with the flick knife on it, knitting needles, cuttlery sets with all the pretty polished steak knifes included!! HOW oh HOW did that get through security? It seems if you want to smuggle something, do it through Nice!

Iloveholland, has been trying to be funny and I apoligize for not understanding this gentleman his sense of humor.
As he will understand this is an airport that built airport cities but under estimates the importance of traveling at those places in favor of shopping malls.... Thus your luggage transfer get a low priority...
get a life! for real airports go to LHR, SIN, HKG, DXB but don't bore us with your limited local knowledge!

Sorry I have to dissagree with your comment on Schipols Security.
I was in the terminal yesterday morning when they closed Pier D
yet I could still walk down to my gate without being challenged!
I travelled from Manchester the previous day to transit through Schipol with KLM . On boarding the A/C at Man we were not asked to show our boarding cards at the aircraft nor did we get a welcome on board or hello.
On arrival we made our way to the next gate we passed through but the girl putting our flight coupons through the machine was on her own and left to help a pax. Whilst she was assisting the pax a guy walked straight through unchallenged!!
He later went back and gave his coupon up to the girl.
On using the toilets in Man term 1 I noticed a bag outside the pub in the departure lounge that was unattended, I brought this to the attention of one of the waiters who said thanks but did sweet FA just carried on talking to his colleague.
We have got all this slackness in the system but we pilots have to take all the new hype of LOCKED FLIGHT DECK DOORS bag checks and so on and on Lets get it sorted on the ground PLEASE!!!!

I’ll agree that SPL is a very good airport operationally, but to think that KLM should have bought AF? Just to put you up to date if, AF had not bought KLM, I don’t think it would have existed for very much longer, without having cut massive amount of jobs and scaling down its operations. This in turn, would have caused uproar in the land of compliance and tolerance. Self criticism is a virtue and is not inherited! Listen and learn to what others think of your fellow countrymen.

This would be the Airline (KLM) and nationality that caused what is still the worst airline disaster in history in Tenerife. yet has the arrogance to still deny any responsibility and believes the Captain was innocent of any wrong doing, dispite the evidence that his arrogance and lack of CRM was the major cause of the crash. As a previous poster said KLM needs to look closely at itself and realise how lucky they are that Air France has taken them on. Wake up and smell the coffee!!

Iloveholland,
if you can tell the level of airport security from the length of time, a passenger has to wait in a big crowd of people in badly vented corridors surrounded by noisy construction sites at the security check, than Schipol must be one of the safest in the world.
AMS is a nightmare for any transit passenger
What a difference to travel via Munich or Kopenhagen, many security checkpoins, almost no waiting time, clean and perfectly airconditioned halls, very polite staff
