Scuba Diving Kit
Any ideas on how to get SCUBA gear to destination without paying any airline an exorbitant amount for excess baggage? Said kit weighs in at 22kilos and I do like to take a change of underwear!
Will anyone allow me to send it on ahead - or is Fedex an option?
All sensible suggestions appreciated

Depends on where you are travelling to and who with, however as far as I am aware the same applies for most airlines:
Longhaul destinations - allowance of two pieces with each piece weighing no more than 32kg (the 32kg is quite strict and adhered to by most airlines, definately by BA)
Shorthaul destinations - allowance is normally 23kg, this again depends on who you travel with, if you are not sure then check your ticket the weight allowance is always displayed there.
Domestic destinations - allowance is normally one piece weighing no more than 32kg
If you are travelling on a multisector journey ie MAN-LGW LGW-BGI and return then the greater allowance goes for the whole journey
If I said that I have never charged for Golf clubs as excess on a shorthaul route, you may be able to make your own conclusions, this will vary from route to route, airline to airline and even hub to hub
Hope this is of some use

I'd suggest phoning the airline before travel and checking with them as it does vary considerably between carriers.
22Kg plus some shreddies shouldn't be a problem with most carriers but best to check.
Agree with Bluejay, and this has been suggested before - if your gear will fit into a golf bag, then you may want to consider this course of action (Far be it from me to try to blag the airlines
)
Beware travelling ex-US, the TSA will open and have a rummage through your gear.

Yep, phone the airline as I have found it varied depending upon who you fly with. Some will allow you class Scuba gear as sports luggage in much the same way as they allow you take your golf clubs on holiday and wont surcharge you - others wont and require a supplement which can work out quite pricey!!
Two that spring to mind that I have used and havent charged are BA and Air France, although BA did manage to loose my gear BOTH directions so it got couried both ways. Got better treatment than I did, wonder how much that servie would have cost if I had asked for it!!!
