Slightly off thread. Early in year 2K, I was on board an Emirates 777, en route Dubai-Heathrow. When we were being pushed back from the terminal in Dubai, the Captain gave us a short 'welcome aboard' talk, and mentioned that that the outside air temperature was +40 C.
I remembered thinking to myself that the take-off run would be quite prolonged, as the aircraft was absolutely full of pax, + fuel, + baggage, and presumably cargo.
When the take-off run commenced, I was amazed by the acceleration, and we were airborne quite quickly.
As we flew across Europe, I was allowed to visit the flight deck (Ah, the good old days!) and when I remarked about the take-off performance to the Captain, he said that the a/c had weighed 290 tonnes at take -off, and that he had only used 85% power!
I was impressed!
