RAAF have a party trick at the dusk Mindil Beach airshow at the completion of the Pitch Black exercise, everyone sitting on the sand dunes watching the fly past in front over the water when a fast jet arrives from behind at 250', over the crowd, pulls to the vertical, all that can be seen is the glowing orb of the afterburner in the twilight gloom. Magic.
The Korean pass was a little different since it wasn't even the finale - just part of their airshow sequence. Definitely a WTF moment!!! I, along with at least half the crowd, ducked and I have absolutely no idea where he went. I reckon a few in the crowd might've needed to check their trousers after that one. |
A long time ago I watched an airshow at RAAF Laverton from the top of a tower the firies used to dry their hoses (not a euphemism…) near the runway. I looked down at the FIII’s (very) low pass.

I will take a second bet that there was a bunch gathering up all the brochures and flyers that they could in the Chalets. Maybe ASIO and the AFAP should have had a closed chat with these gents. But then again their pics would have been sent back by wire to Beijing before they left the show. How would I go taking detail aircraft pics at a Chinese airshow? It would not happen and me to walk away. The Russians? They still have not paid their fuel bill from an Avalon twenty years ago but their agents would be doing the same as the Chinese gents. |
There’s more documentaries, information and pictures available on the internet than anything you’ll ever get with a zoom lens from an airshow.

well lots of misleading info there........ a brochure from a salesman.. "sure - it'll fly in 2025..........." |

It's a different world, isn't it? I mean, they've screwed up so much on so many fronts, but they have got it right with GA.
We let the ball drop years ago.. and if recent master-planning kerfuffles are any indication, the only time we wake up is when a bomb gets dropped. |
Correct. The US Congress legislated BasicMed, over the top of the FAA. The FAA and other NAA’s, like CASA, all have their own version of Avmed leaches on the pilot population. Leaches don’t let go of their victims voluntarily.

Whilst I enjoyed the flying, even if there were big gaps in the program, I really wonder why there is music put on the PA when there is some commentary - at times the music was so loud you could not hear what was been said ???? Its not a rock concert !!

I see other media is talking about the three Chinese gents who were taking lots of shots of the F-22 and the F-35 PLUS pics of the crowd. Big expensive cameras. No doubt special people to include on Chinese people files. I took a bet before the airshow that the Chinese and probably the Russians would be there hoovering up as much technical intel that ….

was waiting for Buddy, Otis, John, Patsy, Richie, Stevie Ray, Randy, Glen, the Big Bopper etc.to be played. |
That gizmo plonked on the belly area of the F22 looks exactly like the webcam bolted onto my hangar. Who knew? I’m guessing a few self-tapping screws and voila: F22 webcam.

On a more serious note, it’s a radar reflector
From the electric interweb: Stealth aircraft, such as the F-22 Raptor or the F-35 Lightning II 5th generation jets are equipped with Luneburg (or Luneberg) lenses: radar reflectors used to make the LO (Low Observable) aircraft (consciously) visible to radars. These devices are installed on the aircraft on the ground are used whenever the aircraft don’t need to evade the radars: during ferry flights when the aircraft use also the transponder in a cooperative way with the ATC (Air Traffic Control) agencies; during training or operative missions that do not require stealthiness; or, more importantly, when the aircraft operate close to the enemy whose ground or flying radars, intelligence gathering sensors. |
That is amazing. Look at the size of the aircraft and it needs that little tennis ball to be seen by radar.
insane. |
