They were just making use of opportunities to gain experience at no cost to the employer.

How long would these flights typically be? In terms of distance and time wise.

How long is a piece of string? Sorry to be unhelpful, not some thing I was personally involved with, just information gained..

A lot of rules seem to not apply...

Broome- Darwin, Ayers Rock- Katherine, Brisbane- Alice Springs C402 solo in the dark for the 100 hrs night SCPL requirement. CAO what?. Then sanity prevailed.

Yup. Did that one night back in the late 80's in a C206 out of Birdsville, headed for Moomba Gas Field.

Was not entirely IMC though; Had to deal with a few en-route Cb's. Easily avoided though. Just stayed well away from the lightning and tried to keep in areas where stars were visible....

When I think back on that night now.....

All good fun, eh? There used to be a C206 paper run south from Darwin, where they threw a couple of jerry can of avgas in the back so you could make the range required...

Don't get me started on that knob rocket operation.

It was C210’s . . . and the “aux tanks” were to avoid the KTR refueller call out fee.

They were the days . . . .

a couple of jerry can of avga
How much did you spill? :p Must have been a fun exercise climbing up in order to pour in the tank.

A couple of dem 210’s ended up with no motion lotion left landing a little off track!

Wasn’t the paper run also done in a 172RG or similar? Brolga Air rings a bell.

Needless to say that was certainly a ticket to mega night hours! If people want to talk about challenging flying, pre magenta line and clapped out old aircraft, respect to every paperrunner!

At least it doesn’t take much to climb above the terrain…:)
