What happened?

What happened to the NT operator that tried to start an engine while his pilot was checking the oil? This story went quiet!

First I’ve heard of it. How long ago did it allegedly happen?

drshmoo 16th Jul 2022 06:24

A couple of months back. Multiple pilot resignations on the same day as a result. I’m interested to follow this up.

Bloody kids these days, too soft. Charles Ulm used to crawl out and top up the oil in flight, should be a compulsory part of the CPL test.

P. G. Taylor.

rodney rude 16th Jul 2022 22:37

Correct Dartie. The legendary Gordon Taylor. Hey Arm out the Window - any chance you could demonstrate crawling out and topping up the oil in your helicopter??

Arm out the window 17th Jul 2022 10:40

Apologies, P.G. Taylor, so it was. That buggered up my attempt at a smart-arse response, will attempt to do better next time.

Luxury! Back in my day, we used to have to go out and dig up the oil from the ground, carry it in an old cardboard box, then fill the engine up while it was taxying to the runway. Kids these days have it too easy I reckon!

Topping up oil!

Anyone try it n a Beverley....engines running!!!!

You seem to have had the experience oldpax. The four big Centauri were classed by us as oil burning, petrol cooled and to cope we carried an 84 gallon overload oil tank in the 'dog kennel' at the rear of the flight deck. At approximately 2 hour intervals, we had to go back and, selecting each engine in turn, hand pump the requisite top-up amount. A couple of hours cruise at 8 - 10000 meant the oil was VERY hard to pump and, aircraft unpressurised and being a heavy smoker did not help, so said one practitioner. Friend even had a similar set up in his Baron (for a round the world speed attempt, which he broke).

AWB, you were lucky! We used to 'ave to kill a dinosaur with our bare hands, wait 65 million years, then dig whacking great hole, suck the oil up in our mouths and spit it into the engine at full RPM ... tell that to kids these days, they won't believe you.

That's horse****, 65 million years? 45 million years max.

Nope, Aotw is close to being correct. 😄

66 million years ago.

Ah, Alvarez, the geos that upended the palaeontologists' worldview and further validated Kuhn's landmark tome...

But then, 'Some' aircraft don't need no oil, nor petrol, nor nuthin'......

'Cause they are so frickin' UGLY that the Earth simply repels 'em......

You guys were lucky to have engines!!

Ixixly 19th Jul 2022 07:34

Engines? Bah! Back in my day, we hadn't even evolved legs, we had to get around as simple microbes. Nice to see some of you haven't evolved your sense of humour beyond the need for a single cell though :}
