Air New Zealand Recruitment - Latest

Just wondering if anyone has any inside knowledge or “hear say” on whether this latest round of recruitment is going to be for Second Officers or a redirection onto he A320 like in 2016? Have heard that they are crying out for A320 Pilots?
And also the amount of Pilots they are forecasting in the near future that they will need?

mattyj 26th Mar 2018 10:47

New Zealand has run out of useful pilots and has almost run out of useless pilots too

morno 26th Mar 2018 13:48

I’m sure there’s plenty in Australia if they’re looking hard enough

Berealgetreal 26th Mar 2018 17:46

Good post mattyj

Useless pilot here who can't get anything. Where do I sign? :}

ElZilcho 26th Mar 2018 19:44

Recent update added quite a few more courses this year. Can't recall the total number, probably 60+

Recruiting on all Fleets. Mainly SO 787 & FO A320 but there's also a few SO 777 slots. They'll ask successful applicants their fleet preference but guarantee's.

HOOROO 26th Mar 2018 22:56

Thanks for the update ElZilcho. In your experience do you think a successful candidate that has a few thousand hours on the A320 would be given a SO spot if that was their preference even though they had all this experience on the A320?

All comes down to who bids for what...

At the moment there a lot of people (capt and FO) who want off the bus.

High_To_Low 27th Mar 2018 00:16

HOOROO,

I went through the interview process Mid 2016 and was successful (A320 FO) but unfortunately due to family reasons at the time was unable to accept the job ☹️. I'm from across the ditch (Aussie side) and sounds like the same operator as you (I had around 3000hr on the A320).

The 2 day process is well run, very enjoyable and professional. They really want to get to get to know YOU as a person. Everyone is very friendly and is there to see you succeed not try and trip you up. I was the only Aussie on my interview day and after a few little jokes and some friendly banter they were very accepting (mind you I do have family in NZ so having a connection to the land of the long white cloud helps with showing your motivation as to why you want to commit to AirNZ...remember it's a career commitment and you will have to move).

I was in the same boat as you - fair bit of experience on the A320 but really wanted an SO slot to experience long haul international ops etc HR is very accomodating to your request for fleet preference but with AirNZ being such a seniority based airline they are limited in what they can do. I'm lucky that I already had a few mates there already and I knew that my chance of getting an SO slot was pretty much non existent as guys who were recruited directly onto the A320 ahead of me were scrambling for any SO slot. Remember, all the internals get offered the SO/A320 FO slots first before the left overs are released to new hires. Prior to my recruitment day there were a fair few new hires who got 787/777 SO but pretty much from mid 2016 it was all A320 FO bar a few.

It's a brilliant airline and I am gutted that I had to say no but family has to come first.

If you need anymore info send us a PM - more than happy to help

Question for the moderators.....

Why do the air nz recruitment threads get moved to the GA and questions section while similar jetstar and qantas threads remain in the other D&G forum?

Cheers

I’ve been wondering the same thing? I’m guessing that Air New Zealand isn’t a real airline, because it’s not based in Straya, the centre of the aviation universe.

high_flyer747 27th Mar 2018 10:30

Air NZ Numbers

Latest update from an official source is that they are looking for 44 A320 F/O’s and 20 S/O’s on the 787 this year.

high_flyer747 28th Mar 2018 11:29

Anyone got the call yet?

More likely if you work for Mount Cook or Air Nelson. Last I heard 80% of interview slots will go to pilots in those airlines first. Then 20% to outside the group.

mattyj 28th Mar 2018 21:06

They’ve already closed the Wanganui and Kapiti service and the latest I heard they’re stopping half the flights out of Gisborne..word on the ground it’s because of crewing issues rather than financial..I wonder which town will be next if the jets clean out the turboprops again

Not really, they mainly sourcing their A320 F/O slots from external type rated Airbus pilots. The S/O slots could apply to the link guys. Its all down to the cost.

The ideal ratio is a 70/30 split, 30% being the externals. That works well when we hire 30 Pilots a year, not so well when we're hiring 100.

There's a few things coming to fruition at the moment, which is unfortunately having a negative effect on Link Pilots progressing into the Jet Fleet.

Air NZ has been expanding while also seeing an increase in Retirements. The Link group has also been expanding and are short on experience for the LHS. They also lost a lot of experience to the jets from 2012-2016(ish) and are still recovering. When supply cant keep up with demand, 70/30 is simply no longer a realistic target.

I'd say the number of Link Pilots getting hired this year wont change, but the percentage will be well below 80% with the increase in numbers.

high_flyer747 5th Apr 2018 23:57

Anyone got any latest updates yet?

kev2002 8th Apr 2018 03:56

Word on the street is the latest course plan will be updated again with a significant ramp up in recruitment. The break up with virgin will probably result in more flying.

Can’t see how they can maintain a 70/30 split. Bit of a bummer for the link crews but they need some perspective. Quick commands on ATRs were unheard of up until pretty recently. Can’t sniff at that.

ElZilcho 1st Jun 2018 05:22

Course planner delayed as there's likely to be another large increase in manpower requirements. No numbers as yet.
NZALPA (and I assume the Federation) are in meetings with the Company in regards to Link Pilot Career pathways. Rumors of Joint seniority and Cadetships.

Nothing will happen overnight of course, but changes are coming....

Safe to assume that's the Companies intention, yes. How that looks, is anyone's guess, but a combined seniority seems to be a popular rumor.

Of course, I'd personally advise anyone (who's in a position) to join the Links ASAP regardless. Once you're an ATR/Q300 skipper then worry about the next step. Until then, it's all good experience.

If you’re successful from your interview, most guys have about six months until they get a start. Although with A320 time they might have openings without much delay at all.

thank you you so much
much appreciated,do you have any clues about the 2 days interview at all?

This two day assessment feedback has been provided to me by a colleague who was successful in Feb 2019.
He/She did not want to post this personally so asked me to do so, in the belief that "Pilots should be helping pilots".
(Please don't ask me any questions, as I obviously don't know)

Day 1 starts at 0700
You will be welcomed by HR and the other assessors who will introduce themselves and you also introduce yourself to the group.
You will then be shown a timetable of events over TWO days. It is different for everyone and you won’t follow a specific order. The information below is also not written in a particular order.

Sim briefing
There are no sim guides sent out to you before the sim session. This is because they book sims for recruitment which may or may not be available on the day. Due to department priority and maintenance. They don’t want you spending time studying for the sim that you may or may not get.

Boeing 787
Basic IF, no FD’s no autothrottle , Everythings manual . Use the PM (pilot monitoring) as your friend and as you normally would.

Simulator
Depart Auckland no thrust no FD
Climb Rwy hdg
On reaching assigned altitude turn 30 angle of bank to a specific heading

Turn right and Intercept 20 nm DME arc.
*Beware - They (the instructor) will constantly ask you questions to divert your attention away from the flying aspect...This is to judge your multitasking. You wont be rude just by saying standby.

When established on the arc, your on radial X ....what’s the distance between your radial X and Radial Y at your dme distance?

Sim Pause - on the chart where are you?
Two VOR’s both DME are inop, draw on a pre prepared Jepp chart, your position

Ok - hold at position ABC ... draw your holding pattern - and then how will you enter and then Brief your PM

Join the hold and descend within the hold

Depart the hold and descend at altitude

Speed up

PAUSE - Discuss where are you in relation to the ILS, then intercept and fly it

Wind direction and speed is blah blah - is that above the crosswind limit for landing ? For 787 ask the PM

Break visual and then land ( up to you as landing is not graded)

During the sim - the instructor is asking a lot of questions - as a distraction and perhaps to test your mental capacity.

Screen height jet aircraft for wet runway conditions

Jepp chart questions

Jepp map questions

What does 6700t mean

Can we fly through a danger area

Can we fly through a restricted area

Who would you talk to to do that

Mile markers

Distances

With your present fuel burn, How long can you on hold for ?

Interview

Generally why you want to join Air NZ

what do you know about the company ?

Share price, vision, history, fleet

What do you know about NZ if your not from here

Walk us through your life events and why you became a pilot

Lasts 15 mins

5 mins to put it together then present to two assessors as to why you put them in that order.
Your running a delivery business and your trucks break down. You have a small vehicle and can only deliver one parcel at a time.

What’s the advantage of a variable incidence tailolane over fixed with a trim tab

Stationary front winds are parallel or perpendicular to the frontYou depart from an airport in a twin where the weather is ok for departure but not for arrival. What’s the etops departure alternate. Calculate max fuel from MTOM/MZFW/MLW

a higher flap speed will do what to climb limiting speed

Your at 4500 ft agl with ISA +10 - what’s your true altitude.

Your position 145 E what’s the time in UTC

In a high level hold what’s your turn direction and timing.

You lose comms in IMC - what do you do ?

You take off in an a320 behind a 767 from an intermediate intersection...what’s the seperation time ?

A visual approach is what

Swept wings are designed for

Equivalent airspeed is what ?

Given map scale 1:1000,000 you draw a line of 3.8cms - what does this distance represent in real terms ?

During takeoff the effect of a headwind on runway mass and climb limited takeoff mass.

What two aircraft systems are required to calculate a wind vector? IRS, Air data computer, GPS, compass.

After the crossover altitude, why climb at constant Mach ?

Group test

Your given a brief to start an airline

You will meet your investors and they will state they’re intentions

They have unlimited funds but want to make money after 1yr and break even

You and your team are to create an airline.

Work effectively ( split up if necessary as mini groups) and do the following.

Name 3 domestic routes you’ll fly

Name 3 Tasman routes

Type of aircraft you’ll use

Brand identity

Uniforms, colours and anything special you want to add to the pax experience

You have 20 mins to work together then pitch/present your ideas to your investors.

Lunch is provided for 30 mins afterwards You’ll gather with all the assessors and your fellow applicants to meet the other people who are also involved in the selection process.
They will then go to integration and contact you next day via telephone.

If unsuccessful they will provide feedback and inform you when you can apply again.

If successful, you’ll be asked to conduct security application and obtain an NZ medical.

Good Luck to all

Could someone who’s attended the assessment days let me know the timeframe as to when you find out if you have been successful or not?

Thank you

Depends, sometimes as quickly as the next day. My interview group had to wait till Friday after a Monday interview.

Yep, uniquely Australian thing. Anything to do with New Zealand aviation must be GA. However when it comes to topics concerning the West Island anything seems to go in the Australia New Zealand and Pacific section. For example

What embarrassing nonsense. As the simulator assessment is a test of manual flying skill, multi-tasking as well as CRM, it would just as effective to have the candidate fly the simulator with one hand and with the other pat his head and rub his tummy and have the support pilot operating both thrust levers.(CRM at its best).

Leave the testing of mental capacity to a qualified psychologist; not an amateur who wouldn't haven't a clue

DeltaT 13th Jul 2019 08:53

Correct, they don't have a clue, hence why they do it...

People have been complaining about this part of the assessment for a few years now.... most likely because they don't understand exactly what is being tested and make their own assumptions. e.g. "as a distraction and perhaps to test your mental capacity."

Have a good read of the info wlshwzd posted.
Take note how the Sim gets paused for some specific questions and not others.

When I did my interview, I was currently flying the 737 (which is the Sim they used) so wasn't overloaded by a "strange type". The guys kept asking me questions throughout the detail as wlshwzd said, and I answered most of them. When it came to manually flying a hold with the RMI (something I wasn't overly current at), I said something to effect of "I need to concentrate here, will answer that later". They immediately left me alone. Same again on the ILS, intercepting off a heading watching for the lead radial, I again asked them to the hold the questions and they did.

While I'm sure there is some element of "mental testing" (i.e. if you can't answer 2+2 while flying S&L) it really is just a distraction test. You should prioritize flying the plane and not allow yourself to balls up an exercise because you prioritized the question during a critical phase of flight.

This part of the Sim actually tied into the interview questions I got. What's the sterile cockpit policy at your Airline? Do you break SOP's? How would you respond to a Captain who does? What's the stable gate criteria? What if you're "almost stable" at that point? etc etc etc

Personally, having worked at a few Airlines over the years, I much prefer the Air NZ sim over others I've done. They aren't looking for perfection and recognize most applicants wont have experience on the given type.
