So, get into air nz link asap? (If one wants to work for Air Nz evenetually?)
Of course, I'd personally advise anyone (who's in a position) to join the Links ASAP regardless. Once you're an ATR/Q300 skipper then worry about the next step. Until then, it's all good experience. |

Good luck! HR just made the rounds this week and offered everyone in the hold file start dates for the start of next year. F20 S8 S7 If you’re successful from your interview, most guys have about six months until they get a start. Although with A320 time they might have openings without much delay at all. thank you you so much much appreciated,do you have any clues about the 2 days interview at all? thanks |

This two day assessment feedback has been provided to me by a colleague who was successful in Feb 2019. He/She did not want to post this personally so asked me to do so, in the belief that "Pilots should be helping pilots". (Please don't ask me any questions, as I obviously don't know) Day 1 starts at 0700 You will be welcomed by HR and the other assessors who will introduce themselves and you also introduce yourself to the group. You will then be shown a timetable of events over TWO days. It is different for everyone and you won’t follow a specific order. The information below is also not written in a particular order. Sim briefing There are no sim guides sent out to you before the sim session. This is because they book sims for recruitment which may or may not be available on the day. Due to department priority and maintenance. They don’t want you spending time studying for the sim that you may or may not get. Boeing 787 Basic IF, no FD’s no autothrottle , Everythings manual . Use the PM (pilot monitoring) as your friend and as you normally would. Simulator Depart Auckland no thrust no FD Climb Rwy hdg On reaching assigned altitude turn 30 angle of bank to a specific heading Turn right and Intercept 20 nm DME arc. *Beware - They (the instructor) will constantly ask you questions to divert your attention away from the flying aspect...This is to judge your multitasking. You wont be rude just by saying standby. When established on the arc, your on radial X ....what’s the distance between your radial X and Radial Y at your dme distance? Sim Pause - on the chart where are you? Two VOR’s both DME are inop, draw on a pre prepared Jepp chart, your position Ok - hold at position ABC ... draw your holding pattern - and then how will you enter and then Brief your PM Join the hold and descend within the hold Depart the hold and descend at altitude Speed up PAUSE - Discuss where are you in relation to the ILS, then intercept and fly it Wind direction and speed is blah blah - is that above the crosswind limit for landing ? For 787 ask the PM Break visual and then land ( up to you as landing is not graded) During the sim - the instructor is asking a lot of questions - as a distraction and perhaps to test your mental capacity. Screen height jet aircraft for wet runway conditions Jepp chart questions Jepp map questions What does 6700t mean Can we fly through a danger area Can we fly through a restricted area Who would you talk to to do that Mile markers Distances With your present fuel burn, How long can you on hold for ? Interview Generally why you want to join Air NZ what do you know about the company ? Share price, vision, history, fleet What do you know about NZ if your not from here Walk us through your life events and why you became a pilot What else have you done apart from flying After your life events, did that change you. What’s the etops departure alternate. Calculate max fuel from MTOM/MZFW/MLW a higher flap speed will do what to climb limiting speed Your at 4500 ft agl with ISA +10 - what’s your true altitude. Given map scale 1:1000,000 you draw a line of 3.8cms - what does this distance represent in real terms ? During takeoff the effect of a headwind on runway mass and climb limited takeoff mass. What two aircraft systems are required to calculate a wind vector? IRS, Air data computer, GPS, compass. After the crossover altitude, why climb at constant Mach ? Group test Your given a brief to start an airline You will meet your investors and they will state they’re intentions They have unlimited funds but want to make money after 1yr and break even You and your team are to create an airline. Work effectively ( split up if necessary as mini groups) and do the following. Name 3 domestic routes you’ll fly Name 3 Tasman routes Type of aircraft you’ll use Brand identity Uniforms, colours and anything special you want to add to the pax experience You have 20 mins to work together then pitch/present your ideas to your investors. Lunch is provided for 30 mins afterwards You’ll gather with all the assessors and your fellow applicants to meet the other people who are also involved in the selection process. They will then go to integration and contact you next day via telephone. If unsuccessful they will provide feedback and inform you when you can apply again. If successful, you’ll be asked to conduct security application and obtain an NZ medical. Good Luck to all |
wlshwzd This has got to be one of the best posts I've ever seen detailing an airline assessment.

14 years to a wide body command??? To coin a phrase..."tell him he's dreamin'!"
|
Could someone who’s attended the assessment days let me know the timeframe as to when you find out if you have been successful or not? Thank you |
Depends, sometimes as quickly as the next day. My interview group had to wait till Friday after a Monday interview.

Any word on jet recruitment continuing ? The brakes have finally come so 2020 will probably only be recruiting to cover attrition, so 20-30 slots. |
Well said 27

Has anyone been through the recruitment process recently?

During the sim - the instructor is asking a lot of questions - as a distraction and perhaps to test your mental capacity. Leave the testing of mental capacity to a qualified psychologist; not an amateur who wouldn't haven't a clue |
Correct, they don't have a clue, hence why they do it...

What embarrassing nonsense. As the simulator assessment is a test of manual flying skill, multi-tasking as well as CRM, it would just as effective to have the candidate fly the simulator with one hand and with the other pat his head and rub his tummy and have the support pilot operating both thrust levers.(CRM at its best).
Leave the testing of mental capacity to a qualified psychologist; not an amateur who wouldn't haven't a clue Have a good read of the info wlshwzd posted. Take note how the Sim gets paused for some specific questions and not others. When I did my interview, I was currently flying the 737 (which is the Sim they used) so wasn't overloaded by a "strange type". The guys kept asking me questions throughout the detail as wlshwzd said, and I answered most of them. When it came to manually flying a hold with the RMI (something I wasn't overly current at), I said something to effect of "I need to concentrate here, will answer that later". They immediately left me alone. Same again on the ILS, intercepting off a heading watching for the lead radial, I again asked them to the hold the questions and they did. While I'm sure there is some element of "mental testing" (i.e. if you can't answer 2+2 while flying S&L) it really is just a distraction test. You should prioritize flying the plane and not allow yourself to balls up an exercise because you prioritized the question during a critical phase of flight. This part of the Sim actually tied into the interview questions I got. What's the sterile cockpit policy at your Airline? Do you break SOP's? How would you respond to a Captain who does? What's the stable gate criteria? What if you're "almost stable" at that point? etc etc etc Personally, having worked at a few Airlines over the years, I much prefer the Air NZ sim over others I've done. They aren't looking for perfection and recognize most applicants wont have experience on the given type. |
