Incident off Broome. Any more details available?

From ABC News
"A search is underway off the coast of Broome in Western Australia, after reports that a light plane is missing. Police believe the twin-engine aircraft went down in the water off Cable Beach after taking off from Broome airport on Wednesday. Emergency services have launched an air-and-sea search for the plane and its pilot, who is understood to have been flying alone. Authorities are searching an area between 300-800 metres off cable beach. Acting Senior Sergeant Dave Walker says authorities have been in discussion with witnesses. "Witnesses around the area observed lights - maybe signals from the plane - entering the bay off the end of the runway and at the moment we have no communication with that plane," he said. A nearby beachside concert, attended by more than a thousand people, was stopped to allow the rescue to get underway but later resumed. Police have set up a command post at the local surf club." |

Shortly after takeoff into the dunes on runway centerline?
I hope it's not another somotographic illusion accident. RIP. |
My first thoughts as well GG. Moonrise isn't until around midnight.
RIP. |
Horrible news...
Any past or present broome aviator who has enjoyed the view of cable beach so many times after takeoff would be greatly saddened by this.. RIP.. :( |

Sadly another fine pilot dies, how we know not, but we have lost a member of the fraternity. For his family and friends my commiserations, and to his company, the same. Australia could never function were it not for these pilots that do the mail runs, and all things commercial, this should always be remembered.

Very sad indeed.
If this is somatogravic illusion yet again I would be interested to hear about how many times questions related to that topic on the CHUF and AHUF were replaced by TEM. There is certainly a place for TEM in the syllabus but it dominates the exam and we study accordingly, perhaps to the detriment of core HPL knowledge. Of course there's been no determination from an investigation but it is worth thinking about. FRQ CB |
Perhaps again in English rather than acronyms?
|
Yes. Please.

Terrible news. RIP mate, you will be sadly missed.
FalconX I'm sure you would have heard by now if it was a friend of yours, PM if not. |
Ok, sat ATPL subjects about 30 years ago before these acronyms.:ooh:
I wouldn't think they would help much here anyway.:hmm: Vary sad for friends and family. |
I would be interested to hear about how many times questions related to that topic on the CHUF and AHUF were replaced by TEM. I did not get any actual questions on the Somatogravic Illusion, however I was well studied and prepared from the texts I had read on its details. It is one topic out of probably all of the ATPL syllabus that is extremely valid and will stay burned into my mind ever time I get into an aircraft at night. I wouldn't go pointing the finger at CASA quite yet. I think the TEM component to the syllabus is quite well balanced. RIP |
Spare us the thread drift. Was anyone there who can shed some light on this?
Was he taking off, returning to land? How credible are witness reports of the aircraft 'spinning' and loud 'banging sounds, like a shotgun'? He was a highly competent pilot from my experience. Farewell mate. |
