Flinders Island NAVEX

Planning on doing a night or 2 camping at Flinders Island, take the GF etc.

Just wondering what maps i'd require, I'm looking at getting the WAC obviously, but would it be necessary to get a TAS(Hobart/Launceston) VTC/VNC ?

Also if people have done this before what was the best route they took?

I'm planning on leaving the Vic coastline via wilsons prom and going via Deal Isl.

Anyway any tips advice would be appreciated, cheers.

VH-XXX 17th Feb 2012 03:57

You'll need a WAC because the VNC doesn't go down far enough but you won't need the Tassie maps.

The standard route from Moorabbin would take you near Leongatha and down via the western side of the Prom, past Deal etc as you have already suggested so you have that part right.

Let me know if you need a contact there for facilities etc. Pick some good weather and you're good to go!

Enjoy.

Just having a look at the islands on the way to Tassie, is there an airsrtip on Deal or Dover islands?, and I guess are they inhabited/visited at all?

Tas WAC has the complete Flinders Island on it. You need Melbourne WAC to get there.

Looking at Google Earth there appears to be some clear ground on Deal but no airstrip.

I've done that run many a times many years ago with various G/F's, one of whom I married !...........second biggest mistake that was !:E Mostly done in SE planes, yeah I know 'jabba' that was back when I was young & dumb !:-)

The route as suggested here by the others is the only way to go, Island hop stay within gliding distance of their shores where possible.
Make sure you have 2 ELT's & lots of survival gear. Charts etc as mentioned here also.
Now the important bit. Have an escape plan at all times whilst traveling that route. I've been caught a few times due lousy wx. Once got stuck on YFLI for 3 extra days (VH TIZ,C210) due low cloud/rain. Another time got caught in Corner Inlet (near the Prom)due low cloud at 500ft flying in circles over the water, luckily was able to fly down the coast eastwards towards a strip (can't think of it's name right now) where I was able to land & had to spend the night there.

FLI is a great place to visit if you like privacy & solitude.Lots of history on that Island too, some not so good.
Take clothes to suit ALL climates:-) FLI is the only place where wood rusts!:)

The Walkers & the Bowmens used to run pretty much the main places there at Whitmark, am sure Stan Walker is long gone. Do a Google search on Walker @ Flinder Island, should yield plenty.

Enjoy the experience but don't go unprepared.

P.s..........don't be tempted to go to YKII, it's nowhere near as appealing !

Killiecrankie on the north western tip of Flinders Island is a great little hamlet. They were building holiday cabins when I was last there 13 years ago. There's a good strip there too.

Stunning beaches, clear water, although a tad fresh. The strip is (obscured) at the bottom of this pic.http://www.flindersislandcp.com.au/i...nkieBeach2.jpg

Scary flight in a single engine!

But don't let that put you off, look at Deal and lament National Parks closing the strip, then enjoy YFLI, tis great.

come on. There has to be an efficiency in spending 100s to rent a plane in order to save $5 on some cheese

MajorCorporalArse 17th Feb 2012 08:20

Whats the word on camping around Killiecrankie if anyone has been? How far of a walk will we have to go to the beach (taking tent and backpacks with food etc).

Does anyone know any information about camping in the area? I'm going to ring the Killiecrankie Aerodrome to have a chat see what they say, will update.
:)

Cookie7 17th Feb 2012 08:29

Fairly sure the Deal Island strip was closed by National or Tas parks.

travelator 17th Feb 2012 08:51

Hey Wally,

He asked

Also if people have done this before what was the best route they took?
And you said

I take it that wasn't the best route then:E

baxr6t 17th Feb 2012 10:01

The strip on Deal Island is very much closed and totally unuseable :-(

compressor stall 17th Feb 2012 10:33

I spent 8 days camped at the base of the big mountain in the distance about 30m from te water with a bunch of rock climbing mates. The scrub is very thick, and finding spots for bush walking tents difficult.

Tiger snakes abound, and te climbing spectacular, if somewhat undergraded.

No reason not to camp on the beach I guess. Tide dependent. Here's a pic from the other side of the headland.

jas24zzk 17th Feb 2012 11:29

Yes, also pretty sure the Deal Island strip was closed, still plan for it as a waypoint...better a closed strip than no strip................

As wally said, plan to island hop. If you don't want that, if you spend some time on the chart, you can do it with 2 turn points over islands that both minimises your turn point numbers and maximum distance from land.

I've done the run in SE a couple of times. On the right day, its extremely rewarding, on the wrong day quite challenging.

Enjoy the weekend :ok:

Scary flight in a single engine!
Pack of pansies!
My first time across the ditch was ferrying a C152 to Devonport. Even the controller had to ask me twice where I was going.
Went via Wilson prom-Deal island-Flinders. Loved every minute of it.

there is a procedure for crossing Bass Straight in the back of ERSA. (or used to be) Follow it.

MajorCorporalArse 17th Feb 2012 21:36

Yeah read that, SP1 of GEN - Not really a lot of information on it even in that. Just talks about reporting which is pretty standard although I'll probably logon to NAIPS and submit a flight notification so probably be the same thing...

Nice pic of the bushwalking, looked really good cheers. - I don't think i'll actually sit on the beach(set tent up), was more just off the sand (maybe dunes/shrubs) but wake up and go for a dip, chuck a line in etc.

AIREHEAD 17th Feb 2012 22:18

Have a look at the visit flinders island website. heaps of info from accommodation to touring info

MajorCorporalArse 24th Feb 2012 05:02

Yeah cheers i've looked, was just seeing what some peoples personal opinions were, bit better than the average joe tourist guide ;)

VH-XXX 25th Feb 2012 10:22

Found a few pics in the archives for you.

It's a bit of a trek over water and as you can see the concept of gliding to land is a little "misguided."

Oh thanks for those pics, looks like it will be a great nav ex, Thats the YFLI airport near whitemark isn't it (the main strip on the island)?

Guess my next thing is to figure out if i'll need to stop in YFLI to refuel or not,

Lucky me has actually met someone's son who's father owns 2 A/C but doesn't have his PPL and he wants to go to FLI for a trip.. - Now to find out what a/c he has and score myself a cheap trip :D

damo1089 28th Feb 2012 12:43

The ERSA recommends and ATC totally love it when transiting VFR aircraft over the Strait either set up reporting times, every 10 minutes or so, which they call SKED but i cant remember what that stands for. Or nominate a more precise sartime for reaching your destination.

I think it also says in there that if you were not to report at a nominated SKED time you'll get rescued quicker than you would if you failed to cancel a sartime, so choose the sked option.

Also take a hunting knife. Sharks a plenty in that ocean and they will swim away if stabbed repeatedly. Or one of those pulse transmitters that keep them away. If the ditching does not kill you, the sharks will. :ok:

compressor stall 28th Feb 2012 19:49

I think the knife thing is a bit dramatic as I'm not sure anyone has ever survived a ditching into bass strait!

Wally Mk2 28th Feb 2012 19:59

I believe & am happy to be proven incorrect that the terminology 'SKED' is short for Scheduled, as in scheduled over water reports or words to that effect.

Love the bit about the hunting knife, adds a nice touch:) I think 'damo' go & have a peek at the movie 'Jaws', might make you think twice about that statement especially when the white pointer (for Eg) comes up from beneath & surgically removes a leg or two b4 you even know he's arrived for dinner, so you won't need yr 'knife & fork after all!:ok:

Would have been a fun trip to FLI in the last week or so with all the lovely wx we have had down Sth:)

That is one of the most amusing things I've heard for a while. As stated already, someone has been watching Jaws I suspect.
