Perth Red Bull race cancelled From: AAP July 29, 2010 12:27PM THE Red Bull Air Race, which has brought more than $12 million to the Perth economy annually, has been cancelled for next year. Organisers of the Red Bull World Championship have told the West Australian Government they have cancelled all events scheduled for 2011. The decision means the event, which attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators and is watched by millions of TV viewers worldwide, will not be part of WA's events calender. In 2008, Tourism Minister Liz Constable said the race returned over $12 million to the Perth economy "which is good for business, especially small business". That year the WA Government announced the race would stay in Perth and would resume in 2010 for three consecutive years until 2012. Tourism Chair Kate Lamont said today that Tourism WA would aggressively pursue new international events to replace the Red Bull Air Race and they were currently finalising a strategy to attract major events. "The future is very bright on the major events front and I look forward to sharing some exciting developments in the near future which will bring to life WA's Experience Extraordinary brand," she said. The Perth leg of the series had been proclaimed by event organisers, pilots and crew as the 'benchmark setting' event of the Air Race championship. In 2010, Perth witnessed a spectacular plane crash in which former airline pilot Adilson Kindlemann plunged into Perth's Swan River during a practice run but escaped virtually unscathed. The race, which was held at various locations around the world, involves 15 pilots completing time trials at speeds of up to 400km/h, whizzing through inflatable pylons above the Swan River. |

I've Googled it, but so-far it only appears in Australian media, and there's no mention on the RBAR website. It'll suck if it has been canned. :( |
Looks like its been cancelled worldwide for next year pending drastic safety changes. May be back in 2011 but it all seems a bit up in the air.
Red Bull Air Race axed after safety concerns LIAM PHILLIPS AND KATHERINE FENECH July 29, 2010 - 11:46AM The Red Bull Air Race has been cancelled worldwide, robbing Western Australia of its flagship tourism event. Tourism WA has been informed that the organising body has axed all stages of the global event for 2011. It is unclear if the race will have a future beyond next year, but the state's peak tourism body is already looking for a replacement event. The Perth event's race director Drew Searle said the decision was taken by Red Bull two days ago, to allow for a "headquarters" restructure as well as the implementation of new safety measures. Mr Searle said Red Bull was looking into "really exciting" safety measures being developed by their motorsports Formula One research and development team and didn't want to roll them out mid-season. "We have a bunch of projects that are very close to fruition," Mr Searle said. "What we don't want to do is have race pilots changing their whole aeroplane mid-season because that would be crazy, especially if you had 15 teams doing it at once." He said the move would protect spectators and the assets of host cities and allow the "adequate amount of time to implement the safety changes". Although he wouldn't elaborate on the changes, he said they would build on those used to rescue Brazilian pilot Adilson Kindlemann when his plane crashed into the Swan River while on a practice run in April. Australian Red Bull pilot Matt Hall agreed safety concerns were probably behind the decision to pull the race next year as it had outgrown its current structure. "Really it's just got almost to the point where it has got unmanageable, which was going to lead to safety problems," he told Radio 6PR. "I have no idea what it means to Perth getting the race back." Perth lord mayor Lisa Scaffidi said the decision had nothing to do with the quality of the Perth race, which she said was held up by organisers as a model event. "It seems as though there's a complete stop and review of the event worldwide," she told Radio 6PR. Eventscorp, the agency charged with attracting big tourism events to WA, was key in establishing the race in Perth. Executive director David Van Ooren said next year's race would be missed. |

Also possibly due to the vast amounts of money RedBull expend yearly on sponsorship over a vast number of "sports" and their private air force that they may be feeling the pinch. :uhoh: After all, running two Formula 1 teams would be enough to make anyones eyes water at the cost. :eek:

This is indeed a shame but I guess safety & money never mix. Although I have to agree with the Dr:8 watching this race & pretty much all races is boring after a while it all boils down to money. Sponsorship is big business these days it pretty much governs how sports are run sadly. Footy is the worst Eg. Gone are the days where the players played for the No. on their backs & a box of 4 & 20 Pies with most players being tradies, now it's drugs sex & God knows what else! Slight thread drift but ALL sports are based on money with aviation having a safety barrier (if you look at it that way) mixed in amongst it.

If it was me organising the Red Bull Air Race in Perth I'd also incorporate:
Red Bull Air Races Low level formations A triathlon course around the river/King's Park Motor/speed boats Formation water skiiers Dragon boat races i.e. involve the crowd in all sorts of interesting things - not just aircraft. |

Arguably the best aerobatic pilots in the world, doing bog laps around blow up pylons, albeit at low level & high Gs. Give them a box over the Swan River, & let them loose with some freestyle :D |

if this is based on a safety measure, i cant help but think of the Reno air races, now they are boring, until someone spears in, and it happens quite regularly i believe.

I read on another forum the Red Bull are also looking closely at their F1 teams next year as well. |
with there team leading the F1 I highly doubt they will be looking at the red bull racing team.
possibly the toro rosso team. But they still own 5 football teams so I really doubt its financial problems, I think they are genuinely trying to re-do the whole system and format. But thats just my opinion. |

At the end of 2006 the budget for the races was 500 million Euro for the following three years. In 2007 they overspent it by 110%.
The plan was to have sponsors in place at the end of three years similar to F1 so that it was self sustainable. At the end of this period the plan was to have the then current pilots coaching/managing younger pilots into the race, and again running it similar to the F1 (plus specially designed race aircraft etc). All this comes just after Chris Meyer publicly withdrew his support of the Air Race with his MX Aircraft. Draw your own conclusions. |
