'10' in plane trouble over Sydney today

HOLLYWOOD star Bo Derek was involved in mid-air emergency above Sydney today.

The actress and former Playboy cover girl was on board a Rex charter propeller jet visiting the Hunter Valley for a tour of horse studs when one of two engines on her plane failed.

The plane spent 20 minutes circling Sydney and dumping fuel and passengers were braced for a crash landing before successfully touching down at Sydney's Mascot Airport.

Derek, 53, is in Sydney for the Asian Racing Conference and was visiting horse studs near Scone as a guest of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia chief executive Peter McGauran.

"Ms Derek has remained composed and controlled throughout he ordeal and provided support for her fellow passengers in this crisis,'' Mr McGauran said.

All A/C have the ability to dump fuel 'Ultra' just some do it 'thru' the engines first then it gets converted into a gas where it self dumps:ok:

F111, as you are a Queenslander, you can be forgiven, but Sydney's major airport is Kingsford Smith. Mascot is a nearby suburb.

Brian Abraham 15th Apr 2010 11:51

The major airport in Sydney has been referred to as "Mascot" for as long as I can remember. It was its initial name when established in 1919, then became "Sydney" 1920, and "Kingsford Smith" 1953. Don't think I've personally heard any aviator call it "Kingsford Smith", always "Mascot". Up until WWII at least, the airport was identified by the name "Mascot" painted on a hangar roof.

The article lost me at the opening sentence "Hollywood star - Bo Derek".

PyroTek 15th Apr 2010 13:52

I read it as:

The plane spent 20 minutes circling Sydney and dumping fuel and passengers...
:eek::}

'Yod' who cares how old those pix are, getting fussy now are we?:E

Well researched there 'BA' although most just call the place "Sydney':-)
Where do you fly into?.....Sydney. Where does the cruise ship leave from?.....Sydney.What's the busiest major airport in Oz?.....Sydney:-)

The_Pharoah 15th Apr 2010 22:40

ahh the reporting...just happened to walk past the tv on my way to make coffee abt 2 mins ago and watched good ole Nat (Ch 7) reporting on the 'mysterious white powder found on board a Virgin Blue 737'...then they cut to a pic of a (shortened) 737 which looked suspiciously like an Embraer - but hey, what do I know right? They're on national TV so THEY must be right. :ugh:

Beautiful women (-of my generation), high stepping horses, and broken turboprops - now thats a FUN mix..

Transition Layer 15th Apr 2010 23:00

Bit hard to tell in that second photo where the horse's mane finishes and the other bit of fluff begins...I guess it was the 80s after all!

Brian Abraham 16th Apr 2010 01:42

most just call the place "Sydney'
Guess it depends what area of aviation you dabble in Wal. To a jumbo driver there is only one destination, but to us we had to differentiate from Bankstown, and Penguin, and Rushcutter, and Garden Island - well, you get the idea. Going to Sydney just didn't cut it. :)

The plane spent 20 minutes circling Sydney and dumping fuel
Must be the F.O.'s job to climb out and open the tank caps.

PA39 16th Apr 2010 02:20

Should've saved the fuel and dumped her out over my house!! give her bloody donkey !

Wally Mk2 16th Apr 2010 03:06

No worries 'BA' to us 'Mexicans" it's Sydney, the place where we try & avoid:ok:

Wmk2:)
