Minimum of 500 hours command or ICUS flight time on multi-engine aircraft under the I.F.R
Sh$t aye.............

Nose wheel first 7th Apr 2010 07:07

Bagchucka, my sources tell me there are only 4 F/O's who are upgradable to command in REX at the moment and just as many who have recently resigned..... and more with interviews.

Krusty will be in a position to comment on the veracity of that statement (and i'm more than happy to stand corrected) but whatever the numbers are, it would appear that REX are going to be in the poo for suitable, qualified drivers in the very near future. No wonder they are looking for drivers who are command ready (or close to) in terms of hour requirements.

One wonders what routes will be the first to go when they can't crew flights again. They recently flew a captain from MEL to TSV just to operate a return MA flight.

j3pipercub 7th Apr 2010 09:15

Its amazing how much GFPT pahlots know these days, including the job satisfaction levels at all the majors...priceless!

Fonz121 7th Apr 2010 10:13

Soo.... Im guessing the ICUS program didn't get up??

And why is TT 2000 if they just want people who are upgradeable quickly? I would have thought as long as you had an ATPL you would be suitable hours wise.

Low capacity AOC requires 2000 hours aeronautical/500 multi command.

Fonz121 7th Apr 2010 10:28

ok cheers.

Chadzat 7th Apr 2010 10:37

there will be a few unhappy cadets now!

KRUSTY 34 7th Apr 2010 11:30

The Cadets have a decade jump on everybody else, so really they shouldn't have a complaint coming. That is unless of course they bought into the CP's Bullsh!t! at their interview. REX will keep whittleing away at CASA and eventually the Cadets will find themselves upgradeable, probably in less time than if they had gone the "Traditional" route.

The problem for REX however is that when that day comes, the now upgradeable Ex Cadets may very well find themselves in an interview for the majors! :}:}:}

Roxy's right on one count however. It's all well and good to up the requirements for direct entry, but who in their right mind would accept what REX are offering if they could, with their experience, apply directly for a Jet job?

REX are just chasing their tails.

apache 7th Apr 2010 11:54

And yet, KRUSTY, everybody has bagged you for saying what you have been saying. and NOW, it is coming oh so true! I would LOVE to see some of these naysayers, who know SO MUCH MORE than you do, apologise !
I wish REX well. I honestly do! I would LOVE to see them continue to prosper, but I am a humble pilot, with no management experience, ergo, I would most probably be wrong in assuming that what every single experienced pilot in Oz has predicted, will come to fruition, and REX will soon be scrambling for EXPERIENCED pilots willing to work for the T&C's on offer.

KRUSTY 34 8th Apr 2010 07:00

Three (3) more Captains resigned in the past 48 hours!!!

Virgin Blue signs order for 50 new Boeing 737 jets | The Australian

What happens to rex when the recruiting starts for this?

Chuck_YeagerBomb 8th Apr 2010 08:10

we all saw this coming a long while back

Don't post on here too much but...

Krusty, gee willickers another 3 captains gone... All the nice guys are leaving too! Command vacancies won't be able to be posted quick enough!

Nose_wheel_first, not sure about only 4 upgradeable F/O's left but I hear there are a fair few F/O's that will require substantial ICUS (150-300 hrs) to meet the total aeronautical requirement of 2000 hrs (or are a bees dick under 500 multi ifr). If this is the case, management should be pushing these guys through training NOW as its going to take a good couple of months before they make the requirements... because below these chaps there is only cadets on the seniority list.

Once again being reactive rather than proactive...:ugh:

kingRB 8th Apr 2010 09:28

to be fair to both sides of the arguement, I did meet a new Captain doing command training on an RPT flight last weekend :p

KRUSTY 34 8th Apr 2010 10:33

Correct KingRB.

And 4 more command vacancies announced only yesterday. Trouble is those that fill the vacancies will be among the last that are upgradeable. As for the Captains in training at the moment, a significant number already have either interviews or start dates with the majors. :ugh:

Incredibly REX management are aware of this but as in the past have chosen to upgrade them anyway. They would rather tie up training resources than pay bypass pay for a few weeks or months!

Go figure.

oneday_soon 8th Apr 2010 11:52

I think the reason why REX have put their requirements back up is not to get local pilots applying, because they wont. They will say to the government there is a pilot shortage, (which there well could be in the next few years), but they will say there is one now and there are no qualified experienced pilots and get work visa's for overseas crew to move here. Nothing will be said about the appaulling T&C's to the government, they will agree and let REX employ OS crews without having to improve their pay.

Only a theory, could be wrong, not the first time!

KRUSTY 34 8th Apr 2010 22:49

Not a bad theory oneday_soon.

During the last round, about 2-3 years ago REX went on a national then global roadshow. The national trip produced one pre-Cadet, bare CPL who has so far given terrific service, although he now has a stiff neck from the draft due to the number of times he's been passed over. After trying everywhere from Eastern Europe to South Africa, REX finally secured the services of 5 SA expats. Total number of pilots from a worldwide search, 6!!!

2 of the SA guys are now in the final stages of their command training, and the remaining 3 will probably be upgraded in the next round. Good blokes and very competant pilots, but they're still at REX, why? Perhaps it's the $30K REX gave them for relocation that would have to be paid back if they leave. Perhaps there's a condition of the 457 Visa. Maybe a combination of both. Once those obstacles are removed however, these boys will be on the wider market.

Grapevine stuff only, but I have heard that up to ten, yes ten! interviewee's have been given start dates, all with the new min requirements. Now this may be the rumour mill operating in reverse, but if true it would be intersting to see just how many of these people are still around by the time their endorsements are finished?

Stay tuned.

Curved Approach 9th Apr 2010 03:32

EBA Negotiations start in 3 months time..... Direct Entry Commands will be number 1 on the list.

As for the raised minimums; purely trying to limit applicants to GA drivers who will be upgradeable in 6-9 months of starting with REX.

oneday_soon: interesting thought, the international search....well; been there done that as Krusty points out!

And surprisingly yes there have been applicants with these hours, and there have been for the last year! The company has looked over these people in favour of cadets. Long story short (its been discussed before) the AAPA had to have full classes being pumped through to get it up and running until they can go in search of overseas airline contracts, and also REX makes money outa the cadets! Now the school is pretty well on its feet and the Captain shortage is well and truely upon us they have returned to Direct Entry, albeit too late????

Will be interesting to see who get the next 4 command positions in SYD. The last two people that got it still need up to 200hrs ICUS. Are they utilising those first to train them up now and holding back those that actually don't need any extra ICUS apart from the normal line training?

chode1984 9th Apr 2010 08:42

I happened to apply to REX a few weeks back before the change in minimums so Im now wondering where I stand. I applied with 1500 tt and 550 ME so does that mean Im out of the equation for now? I realise you need the 2000 tt for low capacity command requirements but wouldn't you still need to gain some time as an FO first? ie making up the gap to 2000.

KRUSTY 34 9th Apr 2010 13:15

All this talk of DEC's. And DEC's with the minimum aeronautical and zero type/company experience!

Could very likely create more problems for REX than it solves methinks.
