new suburb very close to Geelong airport

Capt Wally is back after a little 'jail time':bored:

Ok just saw on the TV 2nite in ML that the 'Dumby' govt is proposing a new housing subdivision (the size of Shepparton, damn huge!) just on the sth edge of the geelong airport (Grovedale) The news feature showed almost the whole time the Airport with comstant footage of planes taking off & ldg. One now has to wonder in the years to come will Grovedale be unuder pressure to be closed due noise? Nothing surprises me these days.
Anyone got the goss on this to date?

Gooday Wally

here is a pic of wally these last few days http://www.augk18.dsl.pipex.com/Smileys/jail2.gif

Yes you do have to wonder about developers and council thinking.

Any purchaser should be made sign a waiver of their rights to complain about aircraft noise at any time in the future and they must transfer this with every subsequent sale.

G'day CW

I think you missed the part where they said they are proposing a housing development for aviation enthusiasts :E:E

:ok:

Chu Mai Huang 25th Nov 2008 07:38

So it appears not well known that Grovedale was been sold for 5 mil, quite some time back?

Mick.B 25th Nov 2008 07:46

I was under the impression that Geelong was to close and be sold off. This is going back a couple of years ago.

John Walters 25th Nov 2008 08:22

To those concerned about the Geelong Airport.

Yes the airport has already been sold to developers as it is in the middle of the proposed new Geelong suburb and is currently being operated under lease which will cease within two years.

Fortunately the alternative is only 5nm to the east, formerly the troubled Barwon Heads Airport which will have new ownership and expansion within the early new year. I understand deposits have been paid with the balance in January.

I have been told the new name will be Geelong/Surfcoast Airpark and will be accommodating those affected by the Geelong closure.

I also hear from a reliable source that the new entity already have plans in place and the Geelong Council have approved a substantial increase for building of new hangars.

I also hear that discussions are taking place to upgrade the airport and runway and its facilities as it is close to Geelong and the Surfcoast and can continue to operate wiothout having residential development for decades to come.

I understand the new ownership group have saved the airport from a take over from parachute interests who wanted a skydive site only which would have meant that the closest airfield to Geelong would have been 40 minutes out of town near toward Ballarat.

Congratulations to those involved and lets hope the project is successful for the sake of all aviators. A geat place to visit and fly the coast.

Capt Wally 25th Nov 2008 08:34

Tnxs 'JW' for the Gellong airport update. I wasn't aware that it had been sold & the news item never mentioned that fact (well not that I twigged too anyway). I hope it all turns out well for all concerned. Airports & residential dev's usually don't mix too well, only hope the new airport to the east is far enough away. I wonder how much strain this new dev will put on the Princess fwy? Avalon will get more use long term, providing there's an airline still in business from there in the future:)

p.s............Jaba now that was funny:E I think I saw chopper whilst I was "in" the joint, he was visiting of course someone else not CW:}

As John said there is only about 3 years left of YGLG. Will be sad to see it go as it has a bit of history, and is the only airport in the area with an east/west runway of decent size.

Does anyone know what the exact plans are for upgrading Barwon Heads runways? I.e Sealing, PAL etc.

This will mean a reasonable increase in traffic at Barwon Heads - Are we going to see some education of those that choose to "fly" their ride on mowers on the weekend.....

Also curious as to whether you have flown in to YGLG Wally? - Either in your current occupation or in a previous life.

flog 25th Nov 2008 08:54

So is Barwon Heads to be council owned in future then (or now, or what now)??

When I asked the current owner (I think I'm talking the same AP here) if I could operate from there over the xmas period I was told flat out no as it would compete with their own flying operation.

I would hate to see them restricting ops from Geelong (wherever that might be in the future) to permanent locals only.

Flog.

Capt Wally 25th Nov 2008 09:31

'Povo' yes Capt Wally has been into Grovedale but not for many moons.
My Co. used to fly into there with the previous A/C (C404) but it's not suitable for our current ops. We land at AV for the Geelong hossy.
Just thinking about the last time into Geelong for me was Nov '97, took about a Doz fire fighters up to Deleget from Geelong for the Bushfire season, well actual fire if I recall.

I guess if Barwon Heads gets expanded then the area still has good airfield access.

.........p.s. 'povo' this bit I liked.......:)choose to "fly" their ride on mowers on the weekend.....

It appears that povopilot has raised his ugly little head again.
Fortunatly I have a very good memory and recalled a posting on another thread with him having a go at anyone who flys an aircraft that is not GA.
He has done it again on this thread with his reference to those who fly ride on mowers at the weekend.
povo I recall POQL offered some very good advice for you and you haven't taken any notice.
I have checked that offering again and totally agree you certainly appear to be a young know it all who only flys GA.
You obviously don't know but I'll remind you that there are a lot of large commercial drivers who have built, own and get great enjoyment out of flying those mowers you refer to.
I'd suggest when you get more experience and are more competent in flying within VH you might also get a lot of enjoyment flying a mower, but then again your narrow atitude will have you continuing with GA and you go no further than doing circuits.
Get out a bit, you don't know everything at 21 although you think you do. Be a little more humble and enjoy your flying, and by the way, do you know that some of these mowers fly quicker than a lot of the common GA aircraft?
See, its amazing isn't it, you can learn something everyday.:ugh:

I am told that the new airport owners are a group of local aviators keen to work with the council in developing the airport but not with council ownership.
I would suggest the airport that was not welcoming was Torquair, limited operations, as all (a couple of exceptions) are welcome at Barwon Heads.
Other threads have indicated the local council have approved a large increase in hangarage that should be available in the new year and the facility will be upgraded asap when approvals are given.:D

Thanks to my info source!!

BULLDOG 248 25th Nov 2008 23:16

YGLG was sold to developers 2 years ago for between 10-20 milllion...No one knows the exact figure. I had no idea the whole operation was moving to Barwon Heads. Last I heard they were cashed up and looking at buying another piece of land to re-locate to.... So does that mean there will be 2 G.A. operators at Barwon Heads???

djpil 26th Nov 2008 00:15

flog, I'll be holidaying at the beach again for part of January. I seem to spend some of my spare holiday time at Barwon Heads airport. Maybe I'll take a Citabria down there to play with this summer.

povopilot 26th Nov 2008 01:20

John, Your sense of humour really is non existant isn't it. I'm sure that plenty of "Big Jet" drivers fly RAA aircraft, and while they are doing so they comply with the correct proceedures and make radio calls that make sense.

The old "Your only 21 what would you know" argument doesnt quite cut it with me mate. If you want to get personal in your arguments give me a PM and i'll send you my phone number and we can perhaps organise to have a beer sometime, and you can share your immense knowledge with me.

Does anyone else have an answer to my question re. the runway upgrade at Barwon Heads.

povopilot. - AKA 21 year old that knows nothing.

POQL 26th Nov 2008 09:34

I see me young mate povo boy is at it again.

One day son you will learn, you took no notice of my earlier posting and John has had to give you a reminder, don't criticize others until you know it all and you are perfect.

You mentioned your old "mate" RT in a posting some time ago. I know RT from way back. I suggest you speak to him about learning and he will tell you that still after 50+ years of flying and dozens of different aircraft of many shapes and sizes including your mowers he is still learning.

When you stop learning and believe you have it totally mastered you will come to grief. Don't let this happen.

What's the concern regarding the runway can you only fly when you have a wide black strip and I believe the east west runway is plenty long enough when the cross wind is too strong.

Just relax boy and enjoy.

pol 26th Nov 2008 10:45

povopilot

Have you another method of making the grass runway and other grassed areas serviceable without mowing.

The guys that choose to "fly" their ride on mowers on the weekend do so voluntarily providing the mowers, their time and the fuel to make available an operative airfield for all users, even those that are still wet behind the ears.:ugh:

Geelong is not the only airport with an E/W runway the E/W runway at BRS is usable in its shortened length as your mate RT will attest and in the New Year it will revert back to its original length.:ooh:

If you are not happy with the runways and operations at BRS remember, airfield usage is not compulsory.:oh:

BULLDOG 284

So does that mean there will be 2 G.A. operators at Barwon Heads???

In a word NO

pol:ok:

VH-XXX 26th Nov 2008 11:04

There is talk that because of this the Geelong Council was going to throw some money at the Lethbridge airpark for sealed runways to take some of the traffic from Grovie. Is there any truth to this?

flog 26th Nov 2008 11:07

djpil, the Yak'll be there as well in the first two weeks of Jan - should be a good summer methinks...

John Walters - could I trouble you to send me the contact details of the 'owner'? Cheers,
Flog.

povopilot 27th Nov 2008 08:00

Wow! Nothing like being attacked after making an attempt at humour and then asking an honest question.

pol - I think you may have missed my light hearted gag about some RAA aircraft resembling ride-on mowers with rotor blades, why would i pay out on a bloke that is mowing the lawn?

My query on the runways is because geelong has runway lighting and 27/09 is used by PA31/C404 size aircraft and i'm not sure if the E/W at Barwon Heads is capable of that.

I'm happy to be corrected on anything that i say and i'm not claiming that i know everything either. This is a discussion forum on a rumour network after all.

I don't claim to be mates with Roy either, have just flown with him a few times and had him beat me into shape. Have not seen him for a while and am wondering how he has been? I swear that you learn more from him in an hour than others could teach you in a day. Bloody interesting fella!

To everyone else on PPRuNe, sorry for putting another YBRS thread up the top. You must have no idea what we are talking about!

Also djpil, any chance on going up for some aero's if you bring the Citabria?

Capt Wally 27th Nov 2008 08:53

'Povo' in yr defence ( & trust me I need it at times also:ok:) I thought yr comments re flying lawn mowers was funny, but then again that's just me:)
Even though at times I've shook my head at 'flying lawn mower drivers' over the years 'cause some don't have a clue I must say some have more experience than Capt Wally. So as long as they mow the grass at grass roots level & keep out of my way they i'll think like Darryl Kerrigan (chk spelling) ...............ahhhh I love the smell of two stroke in the morning:ok::E....classic, one of the best Aussie movies, beats the crap "Australia" hands down, why? becuase it's the genuine article, not a yank in site!!:ok:
