Not many people seem to have been to Tindal at night before. Never mind the Roos, there are chickens on the strip every night, in groups of up to five, that stand up to 4 feet tall.

They jump up in fright, and pass through the compressor. No fence will stop them cause they fliy.

Ah.. - the old Rule 303/25, and the M17 action loaded loud was stern stuff in days gone by. It was Rule 303 that put The Breaker away over 100 years ago, but would be overkill in this situation.

Remember when I was working as a Ringer on Camfield in my pre-flying days, that the 25 was alright on donkeys, but ran out of handloads later when I was trying to bag a buffalo at Humpty Doo after I had made an old bull mad - so would have preferred a more scientific approach and more spare full load ammo then... Had to slink back to the EH ute and set up and load some more shells.. never did get him.
After leaving Camfield another two young ringers and self went via Kunnunurra and Derby and back up to Darwin for a looksee. The cheques ran out so one ringer and I worked in the coldroom at the meatworks in December and we all camped at the end of the airport. Were woken up each morning as the Sabres of the Black Panther squadron took off. One guy and self made it back home in my ute with an empty tank and 10 bob in my pocket for Christmas. We had left Skull (shaved head), behind in Fanny Bay jail after he had taken a car for a joyride without his car yard bosses permission.

tinpis....... I'll call you on that one. You've posted wisely many times. I've observed without comment. Not this time. Aeromed as you call it (NTAMS to those concerned) is NOT a farce. A bunch of dedicated guy's trying to do the best with what they're equipped with. Give them a break and let them get on with it. They actually do a damn good job.

Well, I withdraw aeromed is a farce and insert aeromed services have become a bit of a farce due to kangaroos on the runway at night.
You know I never intended to slur the gallant ladies and gentlemen of that service.

WALLABIES are continuing to plague night operations at a Territory airfield more than four months after a mesh fence was supposed to solve the problem.

Pearl Aviation has not yet resumed aero medical flights at night from the Tindal Air Base near Katherine.

The company continues assessing risks with the defence force.

But Wing Commander Rob Chipman said he was unable to say when Pearl Aviation would resume the flights.

"We do not influence Pearl Aviation," he said. "They're making their own assessments of the risk."

Defence aircraft continue to use the base at night, he said.

"The risk of colliding with a wallaby with a (Defence) aircraft are not quite as dire as they are for a Pearl Aviation aircraft."

Tindal is used for military and civilian flights, including charter, tourism and aero medical services.

Pearl Aviation stopped retrieving patients from the base after two of its planes hit wallabies in 2007.

Two defence F/A-18 Hornets also hit wallabies last year.

A 1.8m-high chain wire mesh barrier was erected around the airfield to cut down on the numbers of wallabies in April.

But Mr Chipman said hundreds of animals remained inside the new fence.

"There are still areas within the wallaby-proof fence that are bushland," he said.

This month Defence culled 112 animals in two weeks.

Mr Chipman said Defence was looking at different ways of solving the problem but found culling had so far proven to be the most successful way.

Their aim isn't getting any better either. Obviously their resolve to get rid of them isn't all that strong. In all honesty that is about two nights work....

RAAF couldn't give a toss because it doesn't affect their operation, but wait untill an accident or something serious and they need that NTAMS aircraft. THEN things will move.

There would be a scream if a pointy jet lost a part of a wheel on take off and the knuck decided to eject.
