Cowls
Chimbu and Tinpis, thanks very much for your comments !
There is some repo cowls for sale in Aviation Trader that range from $9-12k and they are incomplete. One of the single big ticket items for a project. Couple of more pic's to finish off current progress. http://frednolan.com/images/stories/...nov2011_08.jpg http://frednolan.com/images/stories/...nov2011_11.jpg |
Wing's off to jig.
MFU's wings are set to head off to the jig on Wednesday 30 November.
This is a big moment for the project. Completion date is prob between March/June 2012. They will be de-skined etc, inspected and assessed as to what is required for return to service. Thinking ahead on the instrument panel, like G500/600 primary display ? Not what she had in PNG but .... http://www.frednolan.com/images/stories/A185E/C7.jpg |
Your baby of course, but if you dont need the bling why not keep it to the original panel? that would include the older stick not the "Airbag" looking stick.

Control column
Tinpis, I guess you mean the control column's ?
The original yokes are in good order, they are the ones before the big square "airbag" looking types that are in the F series. They will tidy up OK. http://frednolan.com/images/stories/A185E/Pickup08.jpg The original panel is good too and mostly complete. Much of old radio's and cradles are still there but unuseable. But I will need to start from scratch so was considering a clean piece of paper. The G500 PFD/MFD is just an option at this phase. http://frednolan.com/images/stories/A185E/Pickup09.jpg |
One of the 185s I fly in NZ, ZK-EFB, has G500 with synthetic vision and a full Garmin stack + 55X autopilot...very, VERY impressive.
It leaves the Balus Tinpis (B777) for dead. |
G500
Chimbu
Love it ! Can you get me some pic's of the NZ panel, critical for planning purposes and space/layout stuff (or can you intro me to owner). [email protected] or post them here. |
Stby and I can do both.

G500 panel
Chimbu thanks, yes been in touch with GR several times and received several photo's. Exactly what I want. Getting new LHS panel cut out so I can plan better. The sub-panel may go in soon though. I'm still away off and actual radio options may change by then too I guess. I have a full scale drawing made up of the pilot's panel as a draft, like EFB, it makes the new layout very simple. Can't wait.
Nice thing about the G430/530 radio is that I've found a source that are replacing existing like install's with the new G650/750 touch screen units. So with some lead time, I might be able to get hold of some quality used main radio's to feed the 500. Wings have arrived at a separate workshop with a good jig last Monday, they will be opened up and reviewed, hoping there is no major deal there. I have a spare set of wings I possibly can use for parts. If not, they are for sale. So by June, I plan that all the metal work should be done with the cabin up to a stage that the floor is back down. |
MFU now has a rudder.
A little more progress.
MFU now has a rudder and the new OHC tail wheel/fork assy from NZ has arrived. Work continues on the fuselage, horizontal stabilser and fin. http://www.frednolan.com/images/stor...vh-mfu_001.jpg |
Hmmmm... I can't see the piccies in your last two posts.
Your photos from January look great, the inside is so clean! Doesn't look natural without dust, fluff and coffee beans. |
