On a slightly different note; Some time ago I was in my original home town and happened to wander into a new bookshop that had opened. Upon talking to the shop assistant I discovered that they were able to try to source old books.
I now have in my posession 'Balus' volume 2 in mint condition which cost me $60 plus a $20 postage fee to get it to the shop and last week recieved number 101 of 200, a special edition of volume 3, leather bound and personally signed by the author. This cost me $64. :ok: The shop is now trying to obtain volume 1 for me.
It seems that a very limited number of copies may still be about so anyone wishing to know more should pm me.

Well, with all the searching for old PNG stories, in the last week two friends separately have mentioned Tri pella lik lik pig which was about back in the late sixties - would anyone have access to the recording or some clues where to source it.

Long time reader first time poster. Looking for some thoughts please? An ex PNG driver recently advised me to look into applying for a job with Airlink in PNG to build up some multi crew and also turbine time. I meet their minimum F/O requirements but dont know very much about PNG or Airlink? Any advice on the job scene up there? And also what is PNG like to live in? (Ive heard a few scary storries). I have searched the forums but havent really found much useful info.

Well Stevie, (for my 5 toea's worth)

First of all, I'd read a bit of history about the country going back to the early colonial days of Capt.Moresby, the turn of the century and on. Self government and independence. Read Post Courier (PNG) Online, read wings of gold and Balus triology. This should give you a fair bit of background information on the country and civil aviation.

Also, have a look at PNGair website as there is a fair bit of info there also.

Contact Chimbu Chuckles for his comments as well as Womera himself.

A really great 'stick and rudfder' place to fly that sorts the men from the girlies and the experience gained is invaluable for an aviation base from which to progress.

Yes. Can be dangerous, but then so again a lot of country's can be. Even parts of Australia or NZ.

My last suggestion is that if you can afford to do so, buy a ticket and visit the place for a week or so for a look-see. Visit the Aero Club in Port Moresby and talk to the guys there. Visit Airlink, look at their operation, meet the crews, ground and air have a jolly good time and make a final decision. Remember the old chinese proverb, the first step is always the hardest.

I worked for Airlink until 10 yrs ago (correction 11+ :( )...pre volcano and after volcano kicked us out of Rabaul...then got into Air Niugini...before Airlink worked for Talair until it closed shop and Chimbu Aviation was my first aviation job.

All scary stories true...as are all the funny, sad, bizarre and happy ones.

PNG is what you make it...you will do lots of multi engine turbine flying and get a quick command if you're not a dick-hd...the flying is unbeatable ANYWHERE and will serve you in good sted wherever you go afterwards.

Great scuba diving....actually 'world beating' would be a better descriptor.

Seciurity problems vary around the country but nowhere is anything like as safe as Australia...it, PNG, is the poster child for 'third world country' with all that entails.

AIDS is running out of control there...think Africa.

PNG is a land of extremes....in everything....the bad will break your heart and the good is bloody fantastic.

I spent 13+ yrs there and just loved it...Sharpie spent 40 odd yrs there and I am sure loved it too....I concur with his thoughts on going up for a look around....in fact in my time in PNG there was simply no other way you would get a job in PNG....I don't think there would be more than a handfull of pilots who have been hired based on resume only in the last 40 yrs up there.

I concur with the previous two posters completely!:ok: I was only a short timer (total of 18 months) but thoroughly enjoyed my time there and would'nt have missed it for quids!!
Chuckles is quite correct with his statement that going there first is really the only option. I was actually hired on resume alone and found out later that I was indeed lucky in that regard.
