Torres, Joseph K has all the answers you seek. |
some bloke from NCA has been kind enough to post some Kanabea and Kaintiba clips on you tube a couple of days ago :
|
|
oooooh, I shudder when I hear the sound of piston engines now days. :bored:
|
Jesus...that brings back some long repressed muscle memory:}
I flew in and out of Kanobea almost daily for 2.5 years and obviously saw it in all its moods...don't think I ever turned inside the ridge like that though:eek: You can't see TS's Islander wreck anymore either? Kamina bought back memories - of a chap mowing the strip with a push mower when I REALLY needed to put a Twotter on it...he lay quite still while the mower rolled off the bottom into the creek:}:ok: And who could forget Kiantiba in the rain:ooh: Any clue on the rego of the Islander...ex Talair? |
Wiz....Kanabea didnt discriminate, piston or turbine it ate em all

Getzo.
I suspect the Tinpis posting here may have been flying for TAL well before you were there. Indeed, the commencement of his reign of terror in PNG skies pre dated the TAL turbine era. I heard Glen Robinson passed away many years ago, maybe a decade or so? |
Glen Robinson
More like 12 years Torres. It was 96 or 97, same year as Helly died.

Hi Getzo...yes Tom Peninsa was indeed a gentleman of the first order and sadly missed by all who knew him. But the tinpis who posts here is a good guy too, long retired now and earned his spurs on the TAL 185s, Porters etc in the late 60s/early 70s.:ok:
From memory NCA had (ex Talair) Islanders P2-ISM, COD, COB and ISB as well as 402 GKB (long parked/abandoned)...just wondering whether the Islander in the vids is one of those we flew way back when. They weren't exactly new when we flew them, they'd be well over 30000 hr airframes by now:uhoh: |
And BN2 P2-DWA (I'd love to know how many hours that has on it now) and C402 NCD and later RL's KAA as well Chuck.
From the looks of it they have the luxury of decent avionics and a moving map GPS now? Check out Welcome to North Coast Aviation. I love the way they have taken Vincent's 402 and tried to type North Coast down the side :D Have a look at http://www.nca.com.pg/web%20data/png_0002.wmv. Brings a tear to the eye...PNG is like malaria or herpes and you never really get it out of your system :} |
Tinpis- cadets on 380s
When I was in the building (2 yrs ago) only Mal Stewart being groomed. Cheers mate!

Troppo...YEP!
That video...Satwag, Yalumet Gorge, Pindiu and Lenghbati? |
Thanks Sundaun
Bongos, skillfully avoided being checked on one. |

Never flew into Kanabea anywhere near as often as you Chuck but as far as I was concerned, once was enough!!:eek:
When the now Mrs Pinky came up to visit me after I had been working for Douglas Airways for a few months, one of the trips she came along on was a flight into Kanabea. I will never forget the tone of terror in her voice when she saw where I was going to land. 'You're landing there??? That's an airfield???? Still wish I could have shown her Kamulai. Or Oram, Kagi, Nadimumu, Bodimumu, etc etc.:hmm: PNG is like malaria or herpes and you never really get it out of your system Who owns ISM now? Flew it a few times when working for Simbu in Port Morbid and according to my log book I had the R/H engine go on me in the circuit area of Hauwabaga (23rd November '91) and had to go back to Kerema. Thought it was then owned by the Kerema Catholic Diocese. |
I have my hands on a great video compiled by an MBA pilot in the early 2000's with some excellent footage flying around the Goilala's and into the Northern Province. The gutsy music sound track is great as well, very "Apocolypse Now". I currently do a lot of line training with local arab cadet pilots (20 yrs old, 250 hrs TT, 6 hrs on a twin), and now training to be an A330 F/O. I enjoy watching their eyes go wide when I show them what real flying is like and what they have missed... the best training ground in the world. :ok:
Kanabea, I flew there only twice, out of POM in a BN2 when Shags Miles grabbed me to do a lightning charter... as I innocently walked through the Talair Ops room on my way to the Dero Club. I remember thinking this place needs to be respected. Chimbu Chuckles, thanks for reminding me of my old buddy Tom Peninsa, he was indeed a great guy and I shared many beers with him, we also shared a flat in Korobosea for a few months doing a stint flying for Ray Thurecht (Green C310 and Aerostar)... great days and greater memories!! |

The C310 owned by Ray Thurecht was TTM, it was a C310-A, one of the very first C310 models. It was white with green stripes with straight wing tip tanks. We flew this mainly to bring the Niugini Nius from Lae to POM every morning, and fly technicians around the country fixing bank machines for PNGBC.
PVTwas a C310-J model I think, and owned by Pivot Constructions. They had the road building contract for the Kiunga - Tabubil road and some road construction in the Cape Vogel area in Milne Bay.... this was in 1980 - 81. I also flew this aircraft, mainly running spare parts and staff around the country for Pivot. Both these C310's, a C206 and the Aerostar made up the fleet of Moresby Aviation where Tom and I worked for a few months before I moved on to Talair, based in Chimbu. I believe the company only lasted about 2 years... mi lusim tingting nau!! |
VH-TTM Cessna 310
High 6::
I first flew VH-TTM on 19th January 1965, It's call sign was designed as TTM,"Three Ten for Mike. Many a good flight in that aircraft including survey work and a scare at Sydney with a magnetometer head jammed below the fuselage during landing. Good memories. Tmb |
NCA
Xcel, Chuckles & Troppo, Back in the mid 90's NCA had Islanders SAC, ISB, ISL, ISM & DWA (Divine Word Airways?) along with C402 NCD and C206 DQU. We also used Kiunga's C402, COI but RL wouldnt let us NCA pilots fly KAA, only the Kiunga pilots were allowed near it. C402 GKB was parked up.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Kanabea, Kaintiba & Kamina vids on youtube, flew that area a lot for a year or so out of Wau and then occasionally out of Nadzab. Brought back lots of memories, spent a night at Kanabea due weather once. Cheers, BB. |
